League of Legends Worlds 2022: The format of the group stage

In the group stage of the League of Legends Worlds 2022, twelve teams were able to qualify directly via the regional leagues. Four other organizations – Fnatic, DRX, Royal Never Give Up and Evil Geniuses – had to fight their way through the play-in phase and complete the sixteen teams of the Group Stage. This was already divided into four groups of four teams on September 14th. The draw was carried out directly after the North American LCS finals and works according to the principle of the seeding list: Among other things, the winners of the four most influential regions Korea, China, Europe and North America could not already meet each other. In addition, two teams from the same region cannot be drawn into the same group. This resulted in the following groups of Worlds 2022:

Group A Group B Group C Group D
Cloud9 Damwon Kia GAM Esports CTBC Flying Oyster
Edward Gaming G2 Esports rogue Gen.G
T1 JD Gaming Top Esports 100 thieves
Fnatic Evil Geniuses DRX RNG

The implementation of the Worlds 2022 group phase is based on that of classic sports: teams compete against each other twice. There is one point for winning a match, but of course none for a loss – draws do not exist. If there is a tie on points after the six pairings, the direct comparison between the two teams will decide the placement. If there is also the same number of points, a final decision match is played.
