Cyberpunk 2077: Game of the Year Edition is coming in 2023
It’s always amazing how much Cyberpunk 2077 has developed over the past two years: At first you could hardly call the last-gen version of the role-playing game playable, but that has now changed thanks to numerous patches and updates and the console version is at least edible. CD Projekt Red also took a little more time with the first and probably only expansion for the game: “Phantom Liberty” is coming in 2023, but only for the new generation of consoles and the PC. At an investor conference, Adam Kicinski, CEO of the Polish developer, has now revealed that there will very likely be a “Game of the Year” edition for Cyberpunk 2077, which will also include the expansion and another, large, but still very mysterious update.
Cyberpunk GOTY will be released in 2023
At an investor meeting in Warsaw, CD Projekt Red’s CEO revealed that there are behind-the-scenes efforts to make a GOTY version of Cyberpunk 2077 (buy now €59.99 ) to publish. It should appear shortly after the release of the “Phantom Liberty” expansion and a “major update” that has not yet been described in detail.
The news was broke by Polish stocks site Stockwatch.pl, which echoed the CEO’s words: “That’s the natural order of things – it was the same with The Witcher, which was released as Game of the Year Edition after both expansions and has been on the market ever since. Expect the same in this case.”.
So we can look forward to a complete version with all content for Cyberpunk 2077 very soon. However, it is very questionable whether this GOTY version will also appear for the old generation of consoles with PS4 and Xbox One. The trailer for the “Phantom Liberty” expansion only mentions PC, PS5 and Xbox Series. And since the expansion will very likely be included in the GOTY version, it should not appear for the last gen.
Work on the successor should begin
When the “Game of the Year” version is out in the world, the Polish development studio wants to focus more on the development of the numerous other projects that have already been announced: On the one hand, there would be the successor to The Witcher 3 codenamed Polaris, as well as a remake of the first Witcher game with Code Sirius. And in this case particularly interesting: A successor to Cyberpunk 2077 is also being planned.
That will probably be addressed when the GOTY version is finished. CD Projekt has expanded a lot in recent years, so you can probably afford to have more than one triple-A game in the pipeline with the Poles. What do you think of the GOTY version: will it be as successful as The Witcher 3, or is cyberpunk’s reputation still too damaged? Feel free to write that in the comments!
