WoW: How good was the first phase of WotLK Classic? Interim conclusion from Nordend
Almost two and a half months ago Wrath of the Lich King content on the Classic servers landed. That’s quite a lot of IDs, in which Naxxramas was primarily a raid instance on the program, which many classic enthusiasts had already cleaned countless times in the last phase of the vanilla new edition. yawn! As is well known, the necropolis of Kel’Thuzad is flanked by the two raid lightweights Eye of Eternity and Obsidian Sanctum, which do not even deserve the “Evening-length” property. And those are just two of them potential weaknesses of the Nordend remake. But that’s why I haven’t enjoyed Wrath Classic so far? Am I disappointed with the first phase? Do I continue playing with phase 2? It’s time for a first interim conclusion from Nordend!
The perfect WoW phase for casuals
Hopefully the introduction made it clear: It was already clear in advance that the first content phase was not exactly the high point of the Wrath era. Even more so when you consider that this time most players must have known Naxxramas like the back of their hand (that was very different in the original WotLK). Add to that the low difficulty level of most of the endgame challenges. Only “Obsi 3D” with all dragons and isolated successes represent a certain challenge.
There are therefore certainly players who have been bored in Northrend for weeks and hardly log in anymore. It was different for me. Since the launch, I’ve only had time every few evenings to visit Nordend for a few hours. There was simply no opportunity to master every raid instance in the 10- and 25-player variant every week or to play the dungeons up and down. Likewise, I still haven’t gotten all factions to exalted or the most important alts to max level.
But none of that is necessary in Wrath Classic. All bosses have also been defeated several times. A little more luck with the dice and I wouldn’t need loot from the raid instances anymore. And even if the bad luck continues: Luckily there are various alternatives for all slots, which are usually only one my behind the respective BiS alternative in terms of damage potential. Affordable alternatives can also be found in enchantments and jewels. You hardly have to pay anything for bottles and buffet food either.
In other words: As expected, the current Northrend phase is a paradise for casual gamers. Thanks to the manageable level of difficulty, even a raid chunk like Naxxramas with its 15 bosses from PuG raids can be cleaned up in a comparatively short time. There’s even time for Sartharion and Malygos in the evening, and then you’ve already ticked off the most important thing. That fits exactly with my free time availability at the moment.

I still don’t miss a dungeon browser
Before the launch of Wrath Classic, there was a heated debate in the community as to whether the remake made any sense without the original dungeon browser. My point of view has always been: The LFG tool with the automated group search only came with patch 3.3, so it was relatively late. However, I don’t believe in the complete deletion, which Blizzard wants to continue to do, since there were already players in TBC Classic who had enormous problems finding fellow players for dungeons on their servers.
We’ve been in Nordend for almost two and a half months now and so far I haven’t missed the LFG tool one bit. Well, at the beginning of the expansion I looked for a new, active guild (many thanks to Joker for the warm welcome!), but I keep going into the dungeons and raids with random groups and PuG raids. And yes, I use Blizzard’s new group finder extensively for this. In practice, it works well enough for me, although I – admittedly – also on a well populated server games (since WoW (buy now ) Classic: Razorfen). But since the world doesn’t revolve around me alone, I can understand why other players continue to hope for the introduction of the original dungeon browser.
Mixed feelings for phase 2
If we add to the points mentioned so far that I actually enjoyed leveling and questing in Northrend (also thanks to the great zone music pieces!), I can only say: I’ve had my fun with WotLK Classic so far. And yes, I’m really looking forward to the second phase. Less because of the Argent Tournament dailys. I found it boring back then. But for me, Ulduar is one of the best raid experiences in WoW history. Thanks to the hardmodes and achievements and the noticeable increase in difficulty alone, many guilds in the Titan Fortress are likely to spend months without having mastered all of the goals.
However, I’m unsure if Ulduar in this form will fit into my evenings as well as the phase 1 raids did. There were already a few raid groups (partly guild-internal with individual randoms like me) that had their difficulties with Naxxramas and Obsi 2D and collected wipes like other people collect epics. In Ulduar, these raids will probably not see the final boss for a long time. If in doubt, I’ll probably focus on the 10s range, which will certainly be better suited for PUGs.
I’m also excited to the new titan rune dungeons, which can certainly be used to equip the various twinks – if they finally reach level 80. Hopefully the new mechanics will bring enough fresh air to the dusty 5-player instances of Northrend. In combination with the raid epics available on this level of difficulty, the group search should then be buzzing again. How much fun have you had with Northrend’s retro content so far? Are you excited for Wrath Classic Phase 2? Tell us in the comments!
