For his new film, Christopher Nolan simulates an atomic bomb – without CGI!

The implementation visual effects always sparks debate. The apparently declining quality of digital effects in recent years, especially in Marvel Productions, caused a lot of excitement and fuel. The film, which will be released in 2023, seems to be on the other end of the spectrum Oppenheimer to move. This is a biopic of the nuclear scientist J Robert Oppenheimer, who was instrumental in the development of the atomic bomb. And the director has now decided how one would like to visually implement an atomic bomb Christopher Nolan voiced. After all, contrary to some conventions, one does not want to resort to CGI for this representation, but to go a different way.

A nuclear bomb without CGI

Nolan made the statement to the magazine totally movie as follows: “I think the Trinity test [die erste nukleare Waffendetonation in New Mexiko] Implementing it without computer graphics was a big challenge” said the director.

In doing so, his visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson dealt with how different parts of the film could be implemented without CGI. These include, among other things, the presentation of quantum physics or the mentioned Trinity test. How exactly the representation of the atomic bomb was ultimately implemented is not explained in detail. Whether the immense effort for Nolan and Co. will ultimately be worth it is another matter.

From the July 20, 2023 Oppenheimer is supposed to start in German cinemas. With stars like Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Gary Odlman or Robert Downey Jr.
