Lübeck paddles halfway around the world

He couldn’t put his own record in jeopardy, but his colleague from the Lübeck Canoeing and Sailing Club (LKSV) set a new record: while Jens Hollmann (53) in the paddling year 2021 (the season lasted from October 1, 2020 to October 30, 2020) September 2021) had 8,666 kilometers on the virtual clock, Monika Höhne-Amling (51) managed 6,070 km.

“In the past few years, no woman had to show 6000 kilometers or more in her logbook,” says Oliver Rausch, advisor to hiking competitions from the State Canoe Association. The Lübeck Canoeing and Sailing Club also leads the club ranking with 47 433 km ahead of the Itzehoer Kanu Club (40 925). The Lübeck Canoeing Club (VKL / 27 555) took seventh place ahead of the Hamberge Sports Club (SVH / 23 205).

“That is half a time around the world and is enough”

Hollmann had set a national record in the previous year (11,751 km) for the Guinness book he applied with 12,551 (from November 1, 2019 to October 31, 2020). “Unfortunately, I still haven’t really made any progress. They referred me to a rowing association that is supposed to keep record lists,” explains Hollmann. The fact that he couldn’t top his national record doesn’t bother him: “In between I started running again and in two years I paddled over 20,000 kilometers. That’s half a time around the world and enough. “
