Pokémon Pearl and Diamond: In the remakes you keep bumping into corners and that’s annoying

For a few days now, we have been able to go back to the Sinnoh region in Pokémon Radiant Diamond and Shining Pearl, catch pocket monsters and become champions. The remakes of the DS classics for the Nintendo Switch are well received by both critics and the community. However, there are more and more complaints about a problem that did not exist in the originals.

Diamond / pearl with bad collision

The definitions of remakes and remasters are often a bit blurred. Basically, Pokémon Pearl and Diamond belong in the latter category, because the games have been completely redesigned, including gameplay functions that did not exist in the originals. First and foremost, however, this affects the optics, which have made a leap from 2D to 3D. But this is exactly what leads to problems with the hitboxes of items.

Biggest criticism of the community: Dozens of fans are currently speaking on Reddit with a criticism of the collision in Pokémon Pearl and Diamond. The problem: They get stuck on objects and walls, even though they are at a relatively large distance from their character. Some passages look like you can squeeze your way through, but that’s often not the case, which causes confusion. It seems to be particularly bad underground. Various users complain that they can hardly get through rooms because the paths are too narrow.

How did the problem come about? Pokémon Pearl and Diamond were originally based on a sprite look. Boxes are assigned to objects and characters that we cannot cross with our avatar. A 2D house therefore takes up more space because it is “flat” in the landscape, while a 3D render would point upwards.

More current news about Pokémon Pearl and Diamond:

Nintendo seems to have kept the 2D environments as the basis for the remakes of Pokémon Pearl and Diamond. That could at least be the reason why three-dimensional objects take up more space than they should. But no matter what the cause, the matter is definitely annoying and will probably not be able to be fixed so easily with a patch.

Are there any things that bother you about the Pokémon remasters?
