Minecraft 1.18: Diamond Height – Which Level Are Diamonds?

In the 1.18 patch of Minecraft, the distribution of diamonds and ores has changed. We’ll show you at what height you can find diamonds and where you should dig.

What’s new? The update 1.18 for Minecraft is part two of “Caves and Cliffs”. It was released on November 30th, 2021 and brought many changes for the upper and underworld. From now on it is no longer possible to dig at a certain height and find all good ores and stones there.

In this overview we specialize in the diamonds in 1.18 – where do you find them, at what height should you look and where do they not spawn at all?

Finding and mining diamonds – this is where you will find them

At this height, diamonds spawn: All diamonds in Update 1.18 of Minecraft spawn between Y = -64 and Y = 16. Since they are built into the world in a triangular spawn, you have better chances on the deeper levels than above. The best way to search is in the middle of the spawn – so not at the top and not at the bottom either.

To control your height in Minecraft, you have to press F3 on the PC version. The following picture then appears:

What’s the best way to find diamonds? Diamonds spawn “buried” and are covered by other blocks. Furthermore, branch mining is the best solution for finding diamonds efficiently.

The best height to find diamonds in Minecraft is now Y = -60, because that’s where the chances are greatest. Just above the Bedrock stones. However, this is dangerous, since update 1.18 means that lava can now spawn at height Y = -54. So you have to be careful not to get caught in the lava when farming at -60. In addition, it can take longer to farm because of the solid stones there.

If you don’t feel like going into the lava and bedrock, it is best to farm at height Y = -53. Because you don’t have to worry as much about lava, but you also have a slightly lower chance of getting diamonds.

What is branch mining? One of the most efficient ways to farm diamonds is through branch mining. This means that you first dig yourselves into a depth where you want to find the diamonds.

As you do this, dig a room and dig a tunnel that is two blocks high and one block wide. From this tunnel you dig more branch tunnels. Again two blocks high, one block wide. Leave two blocks between each tunnel so that you can make good use of the space.
