Battlefield 2042 is just the cornerstone of a new universe, says EA

Battlefield is set to grow even more and Battlefield 2042 is just the foundation for a large, connected universe.

Battlefield is supposed to become a veritable universe, according to publisher Electronic Arts (EA). The recently released Battlefield 2042 only forms the basis for this, as has now been announced. In the future, a lot more Battlefield experiences will be published, both inside and outside the current shooter from EA studios DICE, Digital Illusions and Ripple Effect. What exactly is behind this remains unclear at the moment.

The Future of Battlefield: Big Changes at DICE and EA

Teams in transition: DICE and EA are currently undergoing some major restructuring related to the Battlefield universe. DICE manager Oskar Gabrielson is leaving the company, while EA manager and Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella will play a bigger role. Oskar Gabrielson’s role will be taken over by ex-Ubisoft Annecy’s Managing Director Rebecka Coutaz in a few months (via: Gamespot).

New EA studio: In addition, a completely new developer studio is to be built or it is already under construction. At the head of it is former Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto. He founds the new studio in Seattle, which is supposed to help expand the world of Battlefield.

EA wants to grow: According to Vince Zampella, Electronic Arts as a whole should “grow significantly”. It’s not just about, but definitely also about a lot more Battlefield – in one form or another. Part of this growth is the new Seattle studio, which, together with Riple Effect (who are working on the portal mode of Battlefield 2042) and DICE, is expanding the story around Battlefield.

“Connected Battlefield Universe”: Don’t worry, Battlefield 2042 will not be replaced or it will disappear, on the contrary. EA wants to massively expand and expand the franchise. How exactly this is supposed to work is currently a bit vague, but it should develop in the direction of Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty franchise. The Battlefield Mobile game coming in 2022 would also fit in with this. Vince Zampella explains at Gamespot:

“As we continue to build and grow Battlefield 2042, we will explore new experiences and business models that we can add to this cornerstone to give our players a great set of experiences.”

“We intend to build a Battlefield universe, one with multiple projects that are interconnected and with the players at the center.

More Battlefield News:

All of this sounds pretty nebulous, of course, but that is probably due to the fact that the plans are not yet completely finished or are not yet to be completely revealed. But apparently we are expecting different games on different platforms and connecting “experiences” that could perhaps come in the form of DLCs and events.

What do you think? How could you imagine what you are hoping for?
