Witcher star Henry Cavill plays Warhammer and has to explain that it is not World of Warcraft

Henry Cavill has become something of an idol for many gamers. In a TV show, the actor had to explain his hobby – and point out that it has nothing to do with the MMORPG World of Warcraft, which he also plays.

Who is Henry Cavill? The British actor is best known for his roles as Geralt von Rivia in the Netflix series “The Witcher” (2019) and as Superman, for example in “Man of Steel” (2013).

In the gaming bubble, Cavill is known to be passionate about indulging in a lot of nerd topics. That is why he is particularly personable for many gamers, after all, he shares a few hobbies with them.

In 2020, for example, he screwed his own gaming PC together with a high-end graphics card. The video of the assembly received over a million views and hundreds of thousands of likes in a very short time.

Now Cavill was sitting with other actors on the Graham Norton Show. This is a comedy chat show on the UK channel BBC One. There Cavill explained one of his hobbies: Warhammer.

“Sounds ridiculous, but it’s fun!”

This is what Cavill says: The presenter Graham Norton asks Cavill about his hobby. He paints small figures and asks: “Was … World of Warcraft, right?”

Cavill corrects him and explains that the characters are Warhammer, not the famous Blizzard MMORPG. When asked whether he paints them by hand or whether they can already be bought, Cavill replies:

“You have to color them. But it depends on how much work you put into it. There is this painter side of the hobby and the player side of it. […] Then you assemble them into armies and fight against the armies of others. That is fun. It sounds ridiculous, but it’s fun! “

This is how the others present react: The moderator himself scoffs at the statement a little and says: “Oh, yes, toys, great fun.” It seems as if he can’t do much with the hobby.

In addition to Cavill, however, there is also Tom Holland, the new actor in Spider-Man from “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017). This seems to be clearly taken with Warhammer. He thinks that sounds “fantastic.”

Warhammer is not Warcraft

What is Warhammer anyway? The famous game by Games Workshop is originally a so-called tabletop. You put together plastic figures, paint them (or not) and fight against other players.

Basically, it is a tactical, turn-based strategy game without a computer, but analog. Depending on the rules, the armies are limited in size and formation. There are different groups to choose from.

Warhammer is divided into a fantasy setting and the futuristic 40,000 setting (“40k”), which takes place in the distant future. Cavill himself is a fan of Warhammer 40k, like many other players around the world.

Warhammer 40K distances itself from parts of its community: “We don’t want your money”

Then what is World of Warcraft? The fantasy world of Blizzard is based on the old strategy game series “Warcraft”. Here, roughly speaking, people fight against orcs with allied races such as dwarves, elves, trolls and tauren.

The World of Warcraft is one of the largest and most famous MMORPGs and has been on the market since 2004. The game is expanded again and again. The latest expansion is Shadowlands.

Warhammer and Warcraft are quite similar, which has resulted in confusion in the past – just because of the names. Fans of the two franchises usually take this little “war” with humor.

World of Warcraft itself is not averse to Cavill either. Or at least he used to play the MMORPG extensively. He surrendered to the world so much that he almost missed one of his most important roles:
