MMOPRG Hope has been in development for 9 years – sentiment is openly hostile
The new MMORPG “Camelot Unchained” has been in development since 2012. But at the end of 2021, the project will be openly attacked and criticized. A new statement by development boss Marc Jacobs causes ridicule and mockery. What’s the matter
What kind of game is this?
- Camelot Unchained is the “spiritual” successor to the PvP classic “Dark Age of Camelot” (2001), which is considered a milestone of the genre for many MMORPG fans, especially for the way in which “PvP” is called “Reich against Reich ”fight was interpreted. Current games like The Elder Scrolls Online and Guild Wars 2 rely on a similar concept.
- The boss of the project is Marc Jacobs, who worked on Warhammer Online in addition to Dark Age of Camelot. With his own studio “City State Entertainment” he wants to implement his vision of an MMORPG – apparently he also harbors one or two grudges against the “gaming industry” and especially against EA.
- But Camelot Unchained has not had a good star for years; the development continues. A year ago an “offshoot of the game” was announced that they wanted to bring to Steam. But “Ragnarök: Final Stand” was a red rag for many fans of the MMORPG.
Fans wait 8 years for a new MMORPG, get a different game, are angry
What’s the current upset? On December 3, 2021, the developers published a post on their website in which they informed their readers about the development of Camelot Unchained (via camelotunchained).
There are some pictures of icons and landscapes in the post.
Mark Jacobs ends the post by stating:
“We focus on making a game that comes out sooner rather than later.”

“As with Star Citizen – only without a budget”
What’s the reaction On the website “Massivelyop”, which is closely monitoring the development of Camelot Unchained and which Mark Jacobs himself often posts, the mood in the comments is openly hostile:
- “It’s a shame, it has turned into a farce.”
- “More than 8 years later and they show us pictures for icons. My God, people … “
- “It’s like Star Citizen, only without a budget …”
- “Hey, they are approaching 9 years of development, we really shouldn’t rush them”
- “Wasting time and resources recording sword sounds in real life instead of taking one of the hundreds of millions of pre-recorded audio recordings is the perfect example of why the game will never appear.”
With the announcement of the new game, the mood shifted
Why is the mood so bad? The sticking point for Camelot Unchained came a year ago. Even with many loyal fans, the mood changed.
In December 2020, the developers of Camelot Unchained announced that they wanted to release a by-product of the development of the MMORPG as a stand-alone game “Ragnarök: The Final Stand.”
It was supposed to be a self-contained PvP game, the development of which benefited the great MMORPG “Camelot Unchained”.
The decision was heavily criticized, many fans who believed in the MMORPG asked for their money back. You had the feeling that the developers were getting bogged down. You should kindly work on the MMORPG.
On October 28th, Final Stand: Ragnarök appeared in Early Access on Steam and had 12 players in absolute peak.
At the moment, the mood at Camelot Unchained really seems to be down. A statement that you are developing a game “that should be released sooner rather than later” seems to bother some of the remaining fans at the moment.
MMORPGs and crowdfunding seem to be very difficult to match:
Why we are so frustrated by crowdfunding new MMOs like Star Citizen
