The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Suffered from a tangible horse problem during development. In a new documentation on YouTube we learn that the team just didn’t want to get a grip on the stubborn steeds at first. In the end, the developers almost hung up the saddle and simply deleted horses from the game completely – dragons were more important to them anyway. You can find out more about the wild ride here.

Horses were too fast for Skyrim

It’s all about this: Jonah Lobe, Character Artist at Skyrim, has published a one-hour documentary on YouTube which he describes as “Reunification and Retrospective”. In this video, Lobe speaks to his former team, who have some interesting new details up their sleeves. Lianna Cruz, who is responsible for animation, reveals that the team struggled to tame their horses.

Cruz reports at one point:

I remember it didn’t work with the horse for a while. We had so much trouble with it when we tried to ride the horse.

One of the big problems was that the cocky steeds were just too fast for the game world. This no longer came with the store. The anger went so far that the team almost “unsaddled”. Cruz tells of a crisis meeting and quotes Creative Director Todd Howard as follows:

We paint the horses if we have to. Because the most important thing is the kite, the exploration and being able to play the way you want.

More about the Elder Scrolls franchise:

Cruz notes that Howard knew exactly what was going on and is pleased that this decision was made at a high level. Ultimately, however, the mounts could still be tamed in time and did not end up in the virtual meat grinder of the cut content. Cruz had more fun working with another animal species, namely dogs, which, as the developer admits, could also be due to the fact that she is a “dog person”.
