Dr Disrespect opens its own AAA studio, wants to compete with CoD Warzone and Apex Legends
What has been hinted at in the past is now a certainty: Dr Disrespect is developing its own shooter to compete with the biggest names. His new AAA development studio is called Midnight Society and was founded with industry veterans. They helped develop Call of Duty and Halo, among other things.
Guy “Dr Disrespect” Beahm he is one of the most popular streamers in the shooter field. Not only his talent with the mouse has contributed to this success: The extravagant character of “Doc”, who Guy Beahm plays in his streams, is an absolute attraction for viewers with a high entertainment factor.
Dr Disrespect not only has expertise as a shooter player. Before he went through the roof as a Twitch streamer, he was a community manager and map designer at Call of Duty. He now wants to return to these roots in game development.
On December 14, 2021, the doc announced on Twitter: He now has his own development studio. It’s called the Midnight Society.
Dr Disrespect suggests a “vertical” battle royale
What kind of game is the streamer developing? It is currently unclear what kind of game Dr Disrespect wants to develop with Midnight Society. The only official statement at this point is that they are “building a PvP multiplayer game from scratch in Unreal Engine 5” (via Twitter).
However, the “Doc” has already indicated a direction in his past streams.
In one of his YouTube streams on August 9, 2021, he showed his viewers two concept drawings:
- One had the writing “Vertikales BR” – the BR probably stands for Battle Royale.
- The other drawing shows a tall building with the text “Wingsuit Platform Extraktion” (via YouTube, Time around 44:20).
These concepts seem to build on an idea Dr Disrespect explained to viewers back in 2018.
What kind of game did the streamer suggest? In the battle royale of his dreams, players would spawn on different floors of tall skyscrapers that slowly burn down. That would force them to fight each other for the rescue zone on the roof (via Dexter). A basis of this idea are the weapons and gadgets from Rainbow Six: Siege.
Whether this dream game will be made a reality with his new studio Midnight Society is currently not clear.
More recently, Dr Disrespect has announced plans to compete with CoD Warzone and Apex Legends with its own game (via Dexter). Recently, he was also loudly etching against CoD Warzone and its players.
Co-founder is the well-known developer of the “CoD Modern Warfare” trilogy
Who is still part of the studio? In addition to Dr Disrespect, other shooter development veterans are also on board. The better known of the two co-founders is Robert Bowling, better known to CoD fans under his internet pseudonym “fourzerotwo”.
Bowling was Infinity Ward’s Community Manager and helped develop the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare trilogy. Since then, he has also worked on Apex Legends, Anthem, FIFA, and Star Wars games in a role at EA.
Another co-founder of Midnight Society is Quinn DelHoyo. He was a developer at 343 Studios and worked there on the multiplayer of the last Halo games. In Halo Infinite, he was still the lead sandbox designer.
Dr Disrespect has drawn more attention lately through his public argument with Twitch: In the summer of 2020, “The Doc” suddenly just disappeared from Twitch. His fans continue to wonder why he is no longer allowed to stream on the large platform, because there was never an explanation.
