Forspoken charges the black protagonist with clichés and receives a lot of criticism

Forspoken relies on the black protagonist Fey. Because female and black heroes are still outnumbered, this form of representation should please women of color in particular. But a preview event now indicates that otherwise it could not be too far away with the rather superficial diversity.

Instead, the character seems to be shaped primarily by racist stereotypes, and there is probably not a single person in the team of authors who does not White is. To make matters worse, actress Ella Balinska was also instructed during the motion capture shoot to give Frey a “hip-hop” gear. Accordingly, criticism is now being voiced loudly.

Forspoken’s handling of stereotypes and representation leaves many question marks

That’s what it’s all about: Forspokens main character is the black New Yorker Frey. She is catapulted into the fantasy world of Athia in a mysterious way and has to deal with all sorts of mythical creatures, a powerful antagonist and also with magic. In the meantime, however, there has been a lot of criticism about the way the main character is dealt with. It should actually serve to reflect the diverse audience and serve as a projection surface so that many people can identify with it.

Why we use the adjective black big and white You can write in italics or what PoC (Person of Color) means, for example in Discrimination-sensitive language glossary from Amnesty International or the ZDF children’s format logo! read up.

What is the problem? Frey is described as “very angry”. She “fell through the cracks of society” and has one foot in jail. Although Square Enix says the team worked closely with several consultants from BIPoC backgrounds, the protagonist’s story doesn’t sound particularly imaginative, but rather sets the alarm bells ringing for many BIPoC.

Racist stereotypes: This is mainly due to the fact that black people are unfortunately still very often confronted and described with such prejudices and stereotypes: Loud, angry, excited, criminal, on the fringes of society and almost in prison anyway.

Rein white Author team: To make matters worse, the people who missed Frey this background story, probably all of them White are. Or maybe that can partly explain why this could happen without anyone at Square Enix noticing. At a preview event, in which GamePro also took part, all presentations on Forspoken were then also from white Speakers taken over.

As well as Kotaku as well as Fanbyte also report that Motion Capturing and Voice Over Director Tom Keegan has said that actress Ella Balinska should give Frey a “hip-hop” gear. Unfortunately, a question about what that should mean was not answered.

Is Forspokens Frey interchangeable? In addition, the choice of a black protagonist seems somewhat interchangeable if her background has no effect in the game world. In the fantasy world of Forspoken, at first glance it actually looks like it doesn’t matter whether it is Frey Schwarz or White is. This reinforces the impression that we are dealing with a kind of fig leaf and only very superficial representation.

This is what the critics say about possible problems with forspoken

In the course of the reports and in response to them, there is now a lot of criticism from BIPoC of Forspoken, the preview event and everything that goes with it. Isaiah Colbert writes at Kotaku that black authors or consultants in prominent positions in the presentation and “people with melanin” in meaningful positions have worked wonders.

“While I don’t doubt that Luminous Productions has consulted Black people on how to create Frey, it didn’t do me any good as a gamer looking for Black representation in games both on-screen and in creating the narrative managed to be greeted only by white authors and only to hear secondhand about this advice. “

“When we have discussions about representation and changes in game development, it often feels like it’s only left with superficial changes, like the face on a game cover or an almost interchangeable protagonist.”

Subnautica Below Zero and Naughty Dog writer Zaire Lanier writes:

That’s what we mean when we say that having characters included isn’t enough if the team behind them doesn’t do the job of making it meaningful. Creating the character is easy. Everything else is difficult, from writing to who is speaking for you. This is important. […] Diversity and inclusivity don’t start with the character model and don’t end there.

We deserve to have characters with completely conceptualized insides that aren’t stereotyped. It should be in art direction, dialogues, world building and so on. Miles Morales isn’t just a Peter Parker reskin.

Miles Morales has a fully realized departure from Peter Parker in many ways. You’re both Spider-Man, but that’s it. From family culture to where they live and the people they hang out with to Miles’ interests. It’s all meaningful.

Frey deserves more than a “hip-hop gang”.

Chandana Ekanayake also sees it very similarly: It is not enough to have representation on the screen.

More about Forspoken:

Of course, a lot can still happen before Forspoken is released. The action adventure with open world is not due to appear until May 24, 2022. It will initially only be available for PS5 and PC, but a later Xbox version cannot be ruled out.

What do you think of the criticism? As a developer studio, how would you approach issues such as diversity and representation?
