Germany is one of the most successful nations in LoL – you should know these 5 players

When you think of professional players in League of Legends, players from Korea or China are probably the first to come to mind. But when it comes to western players, Germany is one of the strongest nations and has already sent 12 players to world championships. We reveal how German players stand in LoL and which ones you should definitely know.

How does Germany compare internationally? In general, esports in LoL is dominated by teams from China and Korea. No team from the west has won the World Cup since Season 1. The players from these regions are well known.

But there have also been over 30 LoL professionals from Germany who have made it into the top American or top European league. This makes us the European country with the most LoL professionals at all, as the Twitter user ExpressLoL clearly shows:

  • So far, 30 different German professionals have played in the LEC, which brings us to 2nd place in the LEC ranking. Only from Korea have there been more players so far (40).
  • At least 7 German professionals played in the LCS (6th place of all nations in the LCS), although there are many overlaps, such as Abbedagge or PowerOfEvil, both of which have played in both Europe and America. Most of the EU players in the LCS come from Denmark, by the way, 12 of them were active here (via Twitter).

Nyph

Nyph LoL SK Gaming
Nyph 2013 in a video by SK Gaming.

Who is this? Patrick “Nyph” Funke was born in 1990 in Kirchheim unter Teck near Stuttgart. His gaming roots were in games like Anno, The Elder Scrolls and World of Warcraft.

In 2011 he started his career as a supporter with the GAMED.DE team.

Which teams did he play for? At the end of 2011, Nyph switched from GAMED to SK Gaming. There he spent 2.5 successful years. He then moved to Alliance in 2013. He was loyal to the team, which later changed its name to Elements, until May 2016. However, in 2015 he briefly took on the role of coach, but then returned to the role of supporter.

For one year, from 2016 to 2017, he took on the role of coach at Schalke 04. What exactly Nyph has been doing since then is not known, but he still seems to have to do with the E-Sport Team Alliance, but no longer in the LoL department.

How successful was it? Nypth took part in the World Championships in LoL three times:

  • Already in 2011 the team GAMED.DE reached the 6th place at the first world championship.
  • With SK Gaming it was only enough for 11/12 in 2012.
  • In 2014 he again qualified for the Worlds with Team Alliance. There it was enough for places 9 to 11, which they shared with SK Gaming, among others.

However, he was unable to win a major title internationally or nationally.

Broken Blade

Who is this? Sergen “Broken Blade” Çelik was born in Turkey in 2000 and has dual citizenship. He takes on the role of top planner and was the first Turkish player to play in the LCS.

Which teams did he play for? Broken Blade began his career with Team Mysterious Monkeys in 2016. He later moved to Galatasaray Esports, Dark Passage, Galakticos and Royal Bandits, four teams from Turkey.

Broken Blade became famous in 2018 when he switched to TSM. In 2020 he returned to Europe and played one season for Schalke 04.

For the coming season he is under contract with Team G2 Esports.

How successful was it? While the first season of 2019 at TSM was rather disappointing, Broken Blade won the LCS Summer Playoffs in 2020. This also secured TSM participation in the Worlds, but disappointingly they were eliminated with 0 wins and 6 losses in the group stage.

Amazing

Amazing Schalke
Amazing 2018 at his presentation on Schalke.

Who is this? Maurice “Amazing” Stückenschneider was born in Bocholt in 1994 and was one of the longest LoL professionals ever. His career began in August 2012 and lasted until November 2019, when he was also an active player in the LCS.

He was on the road as a jungler for the respective teams.

Which teams did he play for? Amazing has worked for several teams in his career and happily switched back and forth between Europe and America. He played for Copenhagen Wolves, TSM, Origen, Fnatic, Schalke 04 and 100 Thieves.

But even after the end of his career, he remained loyal to LoL.

From 2019 to the end of 2021 he took on a coaching role at Misfits Gaming. It is not yet clear where he will go for the coming season.

How successful was it? Amazing reached the Worlds twice:

  • In 2014 he made it to the round of 16 with the American team SoloMid
  • In 2015 he even reached 3rd place with the European team Origen

His greatest successes besides the Worlds were winning with Origen at the Intel Extreme Masters 10 in San Jose and the MVP title in the 4th week of the Summer Split in the LCS. However, it was not enough for a major national title in the LEC or LCS.

Upset

Upset lol Schalke
Upset at his presentation in 2017 on Schalke.

Who is this? Elias “Upset” Lipp is currently one of the greatest German talents in LoL. He was born in 1999 and has been with the LEC since 2017.

Which teams did he play for? Upset’s career began with Team Mysterious Monkeys in 2016, just before Broken Blade joined the team. After a few changes to smaller teams, he ended up at Schalke 04 in 2017. With the team, he was promoted to the LEC and he stayed with Schalke until 2019.

Upset then played one season at Origen and moved to Fnatic at the end of 2020, where he is still active now.

How successful was it? In 2020, Fnatic was able to secure second place in the Summer Playoffs 2021 and Upset played a large part in this. This success also led to participation in the Worlds.

However, due to family reasons, Upset had to leave the Worlds before the first match, which sparked some common rumors. There was no official participation in the Worlds, which is still Upset’s big dream.

PowerOfEvil

Power of Evil TSM
Upset 2019 bei TSM.

Who is this? Tristan “PowerOfEvil” Schrage was born in Bad Soden, Germany in 1997 and played games such as Warcraft 3 and Age of Empires 2 as a child.

In League of Legends he is one of the strongest midlaners in the world.

Which teams did he play for? PowerOfEvil began his professional career in 2013 with Team Mistral. In 2014 he played for Unicorns of Love. After brief stops at Origen and Misfits Gaming, he moved to America in 2017.

There he played for OpTic Gaming, CLG, FlyQuest and TSM. He will spend the coming season with the Immortals team, also in the LCS.

How successful was it? PowerOfEvil was twice at the Worlds in LoL:

  • In 2017 he reached the quarter-finals at the Worlds with the European team Misfits.
  • In 2020 he was just eliminated from the group stage with FlyQuest, after 3 wins and 3 losses.

He also had some success at the national level, but did not win an official title. With Misfits, for example, he reached second place in the 2017 Summer Split, with FlyQuest in 2020 it was “only” enough for second place.

In 2021 he managed to get first place in the group stage in the Summer Split with TSM. But in the final championship to qualify for the Worlds, it was only enough for 4th place.

A few other players could have been named at this point. Like Norman “Kaiser” Kaiser, the current support from MAD Lions and also participant in the Worlds, Felix “Abberdagge” Braun, who led 100 Thieves to the World Cup this year, or Peter “Yellowpete” Wüppen, who was in the early stages of LoL 2013 with the team CLG EU for many exciting and entertaining matches and in 2013 also participated in the Worlds.

So we just ask you: Which German player is your favorite? And which LoL players do you like in general? Feel free to write it in the comments.
