The problem has been around for a long time, but now Square Enix is pulling the rip cord and stopping sales for the time being.

Too successful even: At the moment, however, many players are complaining about Final Fantasy 14. That is not because of the game itself, the gameplay or the like, but because they cannot play in the first place. If you are currently trying to do this, you have to expect hours of waiting because the servers are hopelessly overloaded after the Endwalker release. There just isn’t enough server capacity for everyone.
Expand the servers, unfortunately, is easier said than done. The global shortage of semiconductors means that it is anything but easy to get hold of hardware – which also applies to server infrastructure. The coronavirus pandemic is not exactly helping to simplify production and distribution worldwide, on the contrary. So it will probably stay with the server problems for the time being.
Not more players: In order not to continue to aggravate the technical difficulties, the problem must now be addressed elsewhere. Square Enix explains in a statement that because of this, all versions of Final Fantasy 14 are now being withdrawn from the sale. This means that you cannot buy the game again at the moment. Final Fantasy 14 will not be advertised with new advertisements for the time being, but some deals can no longer be changed.
Anyone who already has a current subscription and has Final Fantasy 14 should be compensated with additional playing time. Final Fantasy 14 is not sold in either the Starter Edition or the Complete Edition and those who use a free trial membership must expect to only be able to play late at night or early in the morning because the paying players are prioritized will. New registrations for Free Trials will also not be accepted.
