Xbox Series X Shortage: Microsoft is filling official Halo tournament with devkits

The ongoing Xbox shortage was also recently felt by participants in a Halo tournament.

It’s no secret that the current-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles are still hard to come by, over a year after they were launched. HOW scarce the consoles are but in some cases takes on really strange traits. As in a recent example for the Xbox Series X.

Apparently too few copies of it were recently available at an official Halo tournament. At least that’s what Tahir Hasandjekic, Halo eSports and Viewership Lead at 343 Industries, wrote on twitter. Accordingly, at the first Halo Championship Series Tournament from Halo Infinite, players * had to partially switch to console devkits because too few retail copies could be obtained.

Devkits can also be used normally

Console devkits are normally not intended for the general public, but are made available to development studios so that they can use them to develop games for the system. The kits can usually be switched to a retail state and can then be used like “normal” consoles. This is also the case with the Halo tournament, where, according to Hasandjekic, the devkits would “function identically”.

The lack of consoles had no impact on the success of the Halo Infinite Champions Series tournament. On the contrary, especially on Twitch, where many matches were streamed, the event was a complete success with almost 200,000 spectators at the same time.
