8 great multiplayer games for the whole family on Nintendo Switch

Are you around the holidays or New Year’s Eve with friends or family and looking for games that you can enjoy together? Then the Nintendo Switch is a good choice – here you will find games for gaming professionals and newcomers alike.

Whether with family or friends: game evenings can be a lot of fun. This applies both to the typical board game evening and to a few fun laps in front of the console.

The only important thing is that you somehow find titles that everyone can relate to. The Nintendo Switch in particular offers a lot of titles that are ideal for mixed groups.

We introduce you to a few candidates from all over the world.

What kind of games are they? In this list, we have mainly put together games that are accessible to both children and parents who have previously had less to do with video games. These are primarily “friendly, accessible games” that can still be challenging. Some of them are suitable for game evenings and are more short-term, while others can take several days.

This is not a ranking, the games are listed in any order.

The classic: Mario Party Superstars

Genre: Party | Player: 1 – 4 | Appeared: 29.10.2021 | Costs (in Nintendo eShop): 59,99 €

What kind of game is this? Mario Party is one of the very old hands on Nintendo consoles. The gameplay comes closest to that of a typical board game evening: You move your characters from the Mario universe with the help of dice across a game board to bag coins and stars.

These boards are not only lovingly designed, but also spiced with action fields. Sometimes there is an item, an alternative route across the game board opens up, you win or lose coins – and so on.

The highlights of a round, however, are the mini-games. Here you compete against your fellow campaigners in colorful competitions. The game principle is usually learned quickly and is not particularly complicated. And: If one game isn’t for you, maybe the next one will do it.

By the way, in “Superstars”, the latest offshoot of the series, you can access 5 game boards and over 100 mini-games from the past. So if you are a Mario Party veteran yourself, you might find one or the other well-known game.

By the way: Alternatively, there is also “Super Mario Party”, which was released in 2018, on the Switch.

How many can play? 1 to 4 players can compete against each other in a party game. One controller is required in each case, but it can be played with individual Joy-Cons. Other controllers are also possible at the same time.

The Friendship Annihilator: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Genre: Racing game | Player: 1 – 4 local, 12 online | Appeared: 28.04.2017 | Costs (in Nintendo eShop): 59,99 €

What kind of game is this? Oh, Mario Kart. You can fall in love with this game even if you have nothing else to do with racing games. Colorfully designed racetracks, varied items and, incidentally, a great soundtrack ensure a lot of good mood.

At least until you are two and a half laps ahead, only to get a blue tank in your face and to be overtaken by the chasing chasers in the last few meters. A classic that has already caused a lot of frustration.

But, once the basics: In Mario Kart you can choose different characters from the Mario universe, put them in a kart (or on a motorcycle) of your choice and then start in individual races, racing series or cups. On the route you repeatedly drive through colorful item boxes that provide you with ammunition: Koopa tanks, bananas, lightning bolts and bob ombs are just some of the items with which you can throw the sand in the gears of your opponents.

In principle, even beginners can quickly find their way around Mario Kart. There is even assistance such as a kind of lane departure warning system or an automatic drive. You can also set slow speeds and simple enemy AI. It’s one of the best games for kids.

But the same applies here: Real Mario Kart masters are hard to beat when you are collecting your first few meters on the racetrack.

How many people can play? Up to four players can compete against each other on a switch.

The culinary stress test: Overcooked

Genre: Kochspiel / Arcade | Player: 1 – 4 | Published: 07/27/2017 | Costs (in Nintendo eShop): 1.99 € (until 06.01.2021, after that 19.99 €)

What is the game about? Overcooked initially has a fairly simple access: The complete control is only dependent on a few buttons and the combination of running, sprinting and “action button” – chopping, cooking, picking up, serving and everything else – is quickly learned. This also applies to gaming beginners and the first recipes are easy to master.

But it doesn’t take long for the game to pick up. Then the time pressure in the kitchen becomes great and you have to do several tasks at once. This is where the true spirit of Overcooked comes to the fore: Suddenly you have to coordinate with each other, you mustn’t get in each other’s way and you have to be careful that the kitchen doesn’t burn down. Good arrangements are required here.

The whole thing can be stressful, but it is also incredibly satisfying when you have mastered a complicated level. The absolutely elementary collaboration makes Overcooked one of the best couch co-op games ever.

To get started, you can simply download the classic Overcooked for little money on the Switch. However, there is also “Overcooked 2” or the complete collection “All You Can Eat” in the shop. They are more extensive, but also a bit more expensive. The game principle is fun in all versions!

How many people can play? Up to four cooking enthusiasts can step on their feet in the kitchen at the same time.

Superheldensause mit Story: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3

Genre: Action | Player: 1 – 4 | Appeared: 19.07.2019 | Costs (in Nintendo eShop): 59,99 €

What is Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3? If you’re looking for a game with a story rather than a party game, then the third installment in the Ultimate Alliance series could be for you. The game was released exclusively for the Switch and offers you a wide range of Marvel superheroes.

The game begins with the Guardians of the Galaxy, but other favorites such as Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Captain Marvel or Black Widow are quickly added. After a short introductory phase, you can swap your heroes as you like and equip them with different skills. First and foremost, you fight your way through colorful levels in the top-down perspective, similar to Diablo – only everything is much more colorful and nicer. Loot doesn’t really exist, but you can access unique skills with all heroes, which can also be combined.

Ultimate Alliance 3 is not a particularly difficult game that even beginners will find their way into quickly. Sometimes the camera perspective can be a bit annoying, but all in all, the game runs smoothly, especially on the big screen. If you are a Marvel fan or at least have a thing for superheroes, you can easily spend a few fun hours with friends or family here.

How many can play? A total of up to four players can join the superhero team and experience the entire story together.

On the next page you will find even more Mario and games for jumping around or coming down. We are also introducing a single player game as a bonus, but which is more fun together.
