The biggest MMORPG on Steam bans more people than Denmark actually has

MIR4 was released for PC on Steam in August 2021, and also came mobile on iOS and Android. The MMORPG from Korea advertises with NFTs and with the fact that you can earn money while playing. The game thus attracts many fans – and also those players who need to be banned.

What kind of MMORPG is that? MIR4 takes place in an Asian fantasy world and is visually reminiscent of established MMORPGs such as Blade & Soul or Swords of Legends Online. It was released in Europe on August 25, 2021 and has been a hit in Korea since late 2020.

With the 5 classes warrior, magician, Taoist, lancer and crossbowman, the selection of playable characters is quite limited. Many actions are also automated, as is often seen with mobile games.

Instead, the game relies more on crafting via “life skills”, loot and exploration. All of this is especially important in order to get “Darksteel” – a resource that can be exchanged for Draco’s. Dracos are a kind of crypto currency and can be exchanged for real money, even if the hourly wage is rather low.

How is MIR4 being received? With 72,244 players on average and over 97,000 at the top, MIR4 is currently the largest MMORPG on Steam (via steamcharts.com). However, it is constantly fighting with New World for the top. But especially at unusual times, in the morning hours, MIr4 is regularly ahead.

The success of Mir4 was even enough for a place in the most played games in 2021 on Steam – just not for the top sellers in 2021. The ratings of MIR4 are rather mixed and quite similar on all platforms:

  • PC: 64% positive and “balanced” among all 10,265 reviews Steam
  • iOS: 3.5 / 5 stars with 563 ratings in the Apple App Store
  • Android: 3.5 / 5 stars with 102,902 ratings in the Google Play Store

There is also a direct client about which no statement can be made. One of the biggest criticisms is bots and bugs. Both problems are being worked on. In the beginning, however, this scared off some players:

New MMORPG on Steam has many players, terrible reviews: “I only play for money”

Daily updates on the bans – Over 7 million accounts blocked

Where do the bans come from? In a daily “Progress Report”, the development team reports how things are going with the game and the players. The numbers of the daily and total account locks as well as the reasons are always explained. In the latest post from December 29th is it[called:

  • Accounts blocked on December 29th: 9,102
  • Total blocked accounts: 7,424,206
  • Reason: Use of unauthorized programs and violation of the user agreement

The number of banned accounts is far above the population of our neighboring country Denmark. It was loud Wikipedia in January 2021 5,840,045.

In any case, the use of automated programs (bots) to grind dark steel seems to be extremely widespread. After all, it can be used to make real money.

Farming the resource is not the only way to make money in MIR4:

The characters themselves can now also be transformed into so-called NFTs and traded in this way. Apparently that even seems to be worth banning the people.

What are NFTs? NFT stands for “Non-Fungible Token” and it is something like digital collectibles. Each item is unique through a code and whoever owns a corresponding item can also sell it.

The value fluctuates enormously and depends, among other things, on how much demand there is. So there is a lot of speculation behind this. MIR4 wants to prevent inflation of its own currency by limiting the absolute amount of Dracos in total.

NFTs are currently a new trend that more and more developers, streamers, and more are jumping on. MeinMMO explains in detail what NFT actually is and why the trend is sometimes making companies worth millions of dollars.
