Atlus is working on the next big game and promises something new for 2022. It probably won’t be a persona.

Persona 5 and the extended version Persona 5 Royal are considered by many to be the best games of all time. So it’s hardly surprising that Atlus is taking its time to announce the studio’s next big game. But it could be in 2022, as the director at Atlus now suggested.

Big new game from Atlus in 2022

The Japanese magazine traditionally speaks Famitsu (via Comicbook) at the end of the year with developers from Japan about the plans and wishes for the coming year. For 2022, Shinjiro Takada from Atlus spoke up and excited about the promise of the studio:

[Wir] hope to launch a new game that will become a pillar for Atlus. The team is very busy developing to make something interesting and satisfying for everyone. I hope you are looking forward to it.

So it doesn’t become a persona: An important note in the message from Takada is that they want to build a “Pillar for Atlus” with the new title. Since Persona is already an existing series from the publisher, it wouldn’t make much sense if it were a new game for the high school RPG. Instead, it suggests a game that has been in development for years: Project Re Fantasy.

What is Project Re Fantasy: Back in 2016 it was announced that Atlus was working on a new RPG. Since then they have been very quiet and have not given any further information. As the name suggests, the whole thing will be much more in the fantasy genre, after the last games had more high school (Persona) or apocalypse settings (Shin Megami Tensei 5).

Is the release already in 2022? Since the game is already six years under its belt, it would not be surprising if the release takes place soon. But many games are still being postponed due to the pandemic situation and the resulting circumstances. JRPG fans should very likely look forward to a first real drop of information about the game.

More about Persona 5:

If you want to familiarize yourself with Atlus RPGs before Project Re Fantasy, it’s easy. All you need is a PS5 and PlayStation Plus. Because the original version of Persona 5 is part of the large PlayStation Plus Collection, which we present to you in more detail in a separate article.

Would you also give Atlus’ new RPG a try, or did the phantom thieves steal your heart in Persona 5 forever?
