Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 3: The surprise of this ultra-wide laptop is its “gigantic” 8-inch secondary screen

In the past we have already seen laptops from manufacturers such as HP or ASUS -which brought the concept to their gaming equipment- in which it was possible to enjoy an auxiliary screen in the chassis in addition to the main one, but the proposal of the new Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 3 it is certainly different and differential.

It is because in this case the auxiliary display is located to the right of the keyboard and not above it as in other models. Lenovo takes advantage of this large format computer (17.3 inches) to propose a design that is certainly surprising and that tries to give this concept a twist.

Prepared to give war

We are facing a team that is clearly designed for creative and professional environments: that second screen can give a lot of play, and the fact that it is 8 inches diagonal and that it is tactile makes it possible for us to squeeze your options into many work and creative settings.

Although that secondary screen is the differential element, the rest of the team is certainly very well armed. For starters, we have the new 12ª generation Intel Core processors con microarquitectura Alder Lake.

In fact We have the new models of the H series or family, which precisely stand out for their higher TDP and for having more ambitious benefits. Although normally these processors will be seen in gaming equipment, having them also in equipment like this makes it clear that we are facing a team of guarantees when it comes to working with all kinds of applications.

Those processors are accompanied up to 32 GB of RAM in LPDDR5 format and also up to 2 TB SSD. The webcam is capable of capturing 1080p video, while connectivity is ensured by the support of Wi-Fi 6E networks.

The main screen is of course the protagonist for the aforementioned 21:10 format and for that resolution of 3,072 x 1,440 pixels. It also supports a refresh rate of 120 Hz more typical of gaming equipment but that we can also enjoy when working, and the maximum brightness reaches 400 nits.

That screen is also well accompanied by a speaker system calibrated by Harman / Kardon and that also have support for Dolby Atmos sound.

A design crowned by its secondary screen

The design of this ThinkBook Plus Gen 3 stands out for its thickness and weight: despite the fact that we are talking about a “big” computer because of its 17.3-inch main screen, its thickness is only 17.9 mm and its weight does not exceed two kilograms.

That thickness is appreciated in a chassis that it’s surprisingly thin on the keyboard part, where in fact we only find a USB-C connector and a headphone connector on the left side.

The computer has a full-size backlit keyboard that makes room on the right side for that secondary screen that is the protagonist when opening the laptop. Above the keyboard we find the power button, which also doubles its function and is also a fingerprint sensor.

The touchpad (called the Click Pad) has generous dimensions, although the 21:10 aspect ratio of the screen makes it longer than one might expect on a 17.3-inch rig that usually gives even more leeway for this component.

The second screen wants to search your site

The ThinkBook Plus Gen 3 design is totally dominated by that secondary screen which is located to the right of the keyboard. Its dimensions are more than respectable thanks to that 8-inch diagonal, but all this is possible thanks to the fact that we are facing a team with a 17.3-inch main screen.

Normally in that part we would find the numeric keypad, but in the ThinkBook Plus Gen 3 this group of keys is replaced with the aforementioned LCD screen, which has a resolution of 800 x 1,280 pixels and from which it is possible to drag elements and contents to the main screen.

The main screen format It is “almost” ultra-wide 21:10, hence that curious resolution of 3,072 x 1,440 pixels Which according to Lenovo is perfect for getting more out of Windows 10 Snap designs. With them it is possible to group the desktop windows so that each one has the size and arrangement that best suits us.

That secondary screen has touch support and it is also possible draw or take notes on it with a digital pen included in the kit, which makes collaboration tasks are significantly enhanced, for example when conducting videoconferences.

That second screen can be used for example as a calculator, but also as an area to have there the tools of the applications that we then use on the main screen. It is also possible to have documents in which the following pages are displayed on it.

And Lenovo have even thought of a “Magic Launcher” function in which we have a kind of Windows start menu with the most frequently used applications ready to be launched from there.

There are other promising options, such as being able to do mirroring of our mobile to improve multitasking scenarios between both devices, and the idea is that these and other uses can make sense of a secondary screen that undoubtedly may be interesting for certain workflows.
