CoD Vanguard confuses fans with anime crossover – “Only a WWII guy who plays cosplay”

Call of Duty: Vanguard has started a new crossover. This time it’s about the hit anime Attack on Titan. In the bundle you get, among other things, the typical swords and animations as well as a skin. But a lot of fans are wondering what the hell the developers were thinking?

What kind of crossover bundle is that? Call of Duty Vanguard regularly brings special skin bundles for multiplayer mode and Warzone to the shop. This usually includes an operator skin, weapon blueprints and various animations and other bells and whistles.

These bundles have a specific theme, for example “pirates” or they are inspired by other franchises. In Cold War, for example, there were crossovers with action films from the 80s, including Rambo and Die Hard.

In Vanguard, however, the theme of the current crossover bundle is the anime Attack on Titan (AoT). Put in the bundle:

  • A skin for the operator Daniel, which is based on the AoT character Levi Ackerman
  • Two weapons named after other AoT heroines
  • The iconic titanslayer blades as melee weapons
  • The emblem of the “wings of freedom”
  • A potato emblem, a tribute to a character from the series who eats potatoes
  • Various finishers, which are modeled on the typical attacks against titans.

What actually is Attack on Titan? Attack on Titan is a popular anime series. In it, people live in a sealed off enclave, while gigantic titans roam the wilderness. The titans like to eat people for their lives and they in turn defend themselves desperately by bringing down the giants with acrobatic attacks and special blades. The series is extremely complex and has a large fan base.

Fans are wondering what the developers thought of the Attack-on-Titan crossover

These are the reactions: As soon as the news about the AoT bundle was revealed on Twitter, there were incredulous reactions from fans on Twitter and reddit.

Among other things, the fans wrote:

  • “This is the strangest collaboration I’ve ever seen!”
  • “They screwed it up and instead of Levi we only have one world war type. the cosplay is playing! “
  • “The finishers look great, but god, the Levi skin is damn terrible!”
  • “Wait a minute, WTF? did that really happen? “
  • “The operator himself looks dissatisfied!”
  • “Mom, I want an AoT skin! – We have an AoT skin at home, from Wish! “

What is bothering the fans? What is particularly noticeable about the reactions is that hardly anyone complains about the chic weapons and animations. They are even extremely popular with the fans. What upsets people is the skin. Because he just doesn’t look like Levi Ackerman – so many fans – it’s just the operator Daniel who wears the Levi jacket and scarf and therefore practically does cosplay.

Many fans would have preferred that to be different. After all, Rambo got his own skin and not just a “cosplay version” in which another dude just runs around half-naked with a headband.

In addition, the choice of Daniel Yatsu of all people as the basis of the skin does not fit. Daniel is of Japanese descent, while Levi is not portrayed as Asian in the series.

Others complain that such anime crossovers basically have no place in a “realistic” game like CoD and should rather stick with Fortnite. Incidentally, there was recently a crossover with the also very popular anime Naruto.

Curiously, by the way, exactly what MeinMMO author Jürgen Horn has always feared has happened: Anime skins in Call of Duty!
