The following is the official description of the main content of the DLC “Cultures of Africa”:

Six new cultures

Epoche 1 – Bantu (Expansionist):
The Bantu expansion is a postulated series of major migrations by an originally Ntu-speaking group from central West Africa across a large part of sub-Saharan Africa. If players choose this culture, there is a lot of land to be conquered quickly and early.

Epoch 2 – Garamanten (agriculture):
The Garamanten developed into a major regional power in the middle of the second century AD. Their growth and expansion relied on a complex and extensive qanat irrigation system (known as Foggaras in the Berber language) that supported a strong agricultural economy and large population. This culture is recommended if you want to get food from dry areas!

Epoch 3 – Swahili (dealer):

The rise of the city-states on the Swahili Coast is largely due to the region’s extensive involvement in a trade network that spanned the Indian Ocean. This culture is recommended if you have many coasts and want to take advantage of them!

Epoch 4 – Maasai (agriculture)
A wild pastoral people with a Nilotic language (as opposed to Bantu or Swahili). For the Maasai, attaining warrior status meant killing a lion with a spear by hand. You choose this culture if you want to optimize your growth rate.

Epoch 5 – Ethiopians (militarists)

During the “Scramble for Africa”, Ethiopia and Liberia were the only two nations that were able to preserve their sovereignty from long-term colonization by a European colonial power. Ethiopia was able to fend off most of the colonial powers by using the natural cliffs and ledges to build its fortresses. Those who want to find out more about the military and science quickly choose this culture.

Epoch 6 – Nigerians (agriculture)
Nigeria brings together a wide variety of cultures under the rule of one state. The diversity of its terrain and the wealth of water resources offer it significant agricultural opportunities, making it one of West Africa’s leading producers. If you want to increase your oil reserves and agricultural workforce, you’ve come to the right place.

Five new wonders:
Kilimanjaro
Victoriafälle
Zuma rocks
Natron Lake
Great Mosque of Djenné
