The App Store has a huge problem with fake app reviews.
The App Store has always been characterized as a place where users feel safe when downloading apps, and that is the case 99% of the time. But nevertheless, there are certain apps that have managed to deceive users with dishonest techniques and make the developers behind them rich.
The “modus operandi” of this type of apps is usually similar and Kosta Eleftheriou, App Store expert, has summed it up nicely in a recent Twitter thread.

How to earn $13,000,000 on the App Store
The steps described by Kosta Eleftheriou seem quite simple to apply, although it is true that you have to invest a good amount of money, and you have to keep in mind that Apple removes such apps when it discovers it.
- Create a basic app that people might be looking for.
- Charge an absurd $10/week (~$520/year) auto-renewing subscription that’s easy to sign up for, but hard to cancel.
- Buy fake reviews that appear every day.
- Done, your app becomes the 135th highest-grossing app on the App Store, generating more than $13 million since 2018.
The app that Kosta has taken as an example is AmpMe – Speaker Booster, an app that of course we do not recommend downloading under any circumstances since it has an exaggerated price and, most likely, does not fulfill what it promises.
According to the data provided, this app has achieved income for a value close to 13 million dollars since its launch in 2018. About 90% of reviews are from fake accounts, with weird names and misspelled texts.

Clearly Apple has some work to do and fake reviews are one of the biggest problems with the App Store right now. If this app had only one star on average, no one would trust it, but has a rating of 4+ for the number of purchased reviews that award 5 stars. Let’s hope that, at least this time, Apple removes the app immediately.
