Omikron slows down runs in Lübeck and the surrounding area

And every year the marmot says hello: After the cancellation of the 48th winter run of the Ratzeburg rowing club planned for Sunday, SV Schmalensee has already canceled the 18th knee run planned for March 20th. On Wednesday evening (January 19th) the organizational team of the 16th Baltic Sea Run will meet in Timmendorfer Strand – and will discuss the possible end of the event, which is also scheduled for March 20th.

20 starters had already registered

“We will have to make a fundamental decision,” explains Andreas Block, the chairman of the organizer NTSV Strand 08. Without wanting to anticipate the meeting, the club boss assumes a cancellation: “We are based on the Kieler Hochbrückenlauf, which is a week later has been scheduled and has already been cancelled. An event with around 1,500 participants and around 80 volunteers, some of whom have already canceled, is almost impossible to carry out,” says Block. In the meantime, the online registration was activated for a short time, 20 starters had already registered. At the moment it says “We’re running? on March 20, 2022?” on the homepage. Because of the pier construction site, a new route was specially designed.

Baltic Sea Run in September?

The Timmendorfer are considering moving their event to September. In 2020 they had to cancel the Baltic Sea Run ten days before the start, in 2021 the original date in March was canceled and after the next Corona wave the alternative date in November. Now Omikron slows down the fourth attempt. “After Easter, i.e. from mid-April, it is said that running events can be planned again,” reports Block.
