Last year we already told you about a game that you can fish from the PS Store for a small dollar. We’re talking about the platformer Thomas Was Alone. As I have now seen, the game continues for 79 cents on offer. For me it was a great opportunity to write a few lines about a game that has stuck with me to this day – and for you the opportunity to get to know a little video game pearl.

This is what awaits you in Thomas Was Alone

  • Genre: Jump & Run
  • Current consoles: PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series

In Thomas Was Alone you have to guide a group of rectangles through an obstacle course using the abilities of the special hero squad to get to the end of the level. It may look simple and sound a little simplistic, but behind the facade lies an emotional story and a soundtrack that has stayed with me to this day.

Why Thomas Was Alone hasn’t let go of me to this day

Rae Grimm: It’s almost ten years since I last played Thomas Was Alone, but the little indie game hasn’t let go of me to this day. Once because I never got over how emotional a few rectangles could make me. But also because the fantastic soundtrack by David Housden still accompanies me as an integral part of my writing playlist and is one of the best OSTs that video games have ever produced.

Sure, the minimalist platformer has never won awards for graphics or even gameplay. His surprisingly soulful story about the eponymous square Thomas, which is not as isolated as the name suggests, remains in the memory for a long time. Thomas Was Alone also has speaker Danny Wallace to thank for this, who tells the story with humor and charm and comments on our actions.

Thomas Was Alone is still the perfect proof today that you don’t need bombastic graphics or gigantic budgets to offer emotional depth or creative storytelling in games. All you apparently need is a charming, humorous narrator and a few charismatic squares.
