Call of Duty 2022: Everything we know so far – leaks on release, setting, game modes

Officially we don’t know anything about the new Call of Duty: 2022 yet. Leaks indicate a Modern Warfare 2. MeinMMO has looked at leaks and leaked information and informed you about what apparently awaits you in the new CoD.

With 2020’s CoD, Black Ops Cold War, Call of Duty has changed the way the shooter series announces its annual titles. If there was information about the release earlier in the year, the first official announcements will only come later.

However, work on a new CoD does not begin with the release of the current title. The developers work on the latest shooter in the series for several years – which always leads to leaks.

MeinMMO therefore shows you here in an overview what everything is “possibly” already known about CoD: 2022. The most important information is currently:

  • CoD: 2022 will be Modern Warfare 2 – a sequel to the 2019 CoD
  • The new CoD comes maybe a month earlier than usual
  • There is again a collaboration with Warzone – a completely new map appears possible
  • New game mode DMZ – probably based on “Escape from Tarkov”
  • The campaign may continue the story of CoD MW

Noticed: There is so far none official information about the CoD 2022. Everything in the article is based on the statements of alleged insiders, dataminers or leaks carried to the outside. Also, the release is still a while away and things may change as development progresses.

So take the information with a certain skepticism. As soon as there are new details or official information, we will update the article accordingly. We divide the information into:

  • What is considered safe? – Info that has been confirmed by several sources and is considered more or less certain
  • What do leaks say? – Isolated statements from alleged insiders that are considered possible

CoD 2022: Release, Setting, Story

What is considered safe? The new CoD: 2022 is a sequel to Modern Warfare from 2019. It’s called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.

It is intended to continue the story of CoD 2019 and plays accordingly in a setting that is quite similar to our world – even with the year.

CoD: 2022 will also appear again on the last-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One. However, it should be the last CoD title to provide support for the old consoles.

What do leaks say? Familiar characters from the MW story could make a comeback: Captain Price, Gaz, Ghost, maybe even Soap. But the new characters from CoD MW 2019 could also return – like Alex, who at first thought he had heroically sacrificed himself at the end of the story.

Some leakers claim they saw early gameplay and spotted a possible mission centered around drug cartels in Colombia. In addition, the moral player decisions should have an impact on the story.

There should be a significant leap forward in the intelligence of the enemy NPC troops.

In addition, the regularly well-informed leaker “Tom Henderson” (formerly LongSensation) claims that CoD: 2022 could appear much earlier – in October instead of November.

The leaker cited the sales of the current title CoD: Vanguard as the reason, which is probably below expectations. However, the common Warzone content would only come later. We embed the tweet for you here:

CoD 2022: Game Modes – No Zombies, Instead “DMZ”

What is considered safe? As usual, there is a story campaign and the big multiplayer mode. Zombies, on the other hand, are probably not planned, but a completely new mode: DMZ (Demilitarized Zone).

What do leaks say? The new DMZ mode probably has similar rules as the hardcore shooter “Escape from Tarkov” or the PvEvP mode “Hazard Zone” from Battlefield 2042.

You start at a point on a large map and have to make your way to an exit. Real players and NPCs make your life difficult along the way. 25 to 30 real players cavort on the map.

The whole thing should be enriched with smaller RPG mechanics that provide a certain amount of progress with each match. Provided you make it to the finish. When you die, you lose certain things, like collected equipment.

What that should look like in detail remains unclear for the time being. There is talk of special traders, using your own loadout and modes for solo players, duos, trios and teams of 4.

However, we don’t yet have a correct idea of how DMZ wants to stand out from the competition. Similar approaches already exist with Hazard Zone, Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown.

However, the mode is apparently closely related to Warzone.

CoD 2022 & Warzone – Next new map could come

What is considered safe? Warzone and CoD: 2022 are doing things together – like the last 3 CoD parts.

It is assumed that Warzone will get all the weapons again and run joint live seasons with CoD: 2022. The story should probably play again in the current time. The current map, Caldera, is set at the end of World War II.

What do leaks say? For the DMZ mode mentioned, Call of Duty is probably developing a large map that could also come for Warzone.

The developers proceeded in a similar way with CoD MW 2019. The Warzone map “Verdansk” was not only intended for the Battle Royale. The missions also played on the big map in the “Spec Ops” co-op mode.

Originally, it was even planned to create the Verdansk map as an open world for the “Spec Ops” mode. However, that was rejected and only with Warzone was the map playable in one piece.

It could be different this time with the DMZ mode – the big map is the playground for the new mode and could also come to Warzone later.

The map is said to contain many well-known elements from the popular Modern Warfare 2 from 2009.

CoD 2022: Gameplay – Slightly faster and with fan service

What is considered safe? There is nothing certain about the gameplay of the new title so far. Some leakers claim they’ve seen early alpha gameplay and feel the speed is slightly faster compared to its predecessors.

However, such gameplay details can change rapidly. It is therefore difficult to make reliable statements.

What do leaks say? New maps should be based more on a structure à la Counter Strike. There’s talk of maps becoming more unique, with more variety. This should help to increase the overall replay value.

Appropriately, there could be a new and expanded “Search & Destroy” mode in the game: “Attackers vs. Defenders”. The maps of the mode consist of several segments, which the attackers must gradually conquer. The defenders should prevent that.

To do this, players are assigned a specific role before a segment, including a “Team Leader” who coordinates the actions of others. Other mechanics:

  • Injuries hinder hit players
  • Attackers can revive comrades
  • Defenders can set up traps and cameras
  • Time limit to reach the goal
  • destruction on the map
  • construction of fortifications

Apart from the new mode, many well-known maps from the popular classic CoD MW 2 from 2009 could come into play. Long-awaited remakes are possible, such as:

  • Slum
  • Terminal
  • High Rise
  • Quarry
