Sony expects Activision games to come to PlayStation even after the acquisition

Sony assumes that Activision games will continue to be multiplatform and will be released for PS4 or PS5. Sony has now explained this in a first statement on the deal. The company not only expects existing contracts to be honored, but also explicitly expects Activision games to continue to be released for PlayStation. At least that sounds like a relatively clear answer to the question many fans are asking after Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Sony assumes that Activision games will continue to appear for PlayStation

That’s what it’s about: Microsoft wants to buy Activision Blizzard. The deal isn’t done yet and it may take until mid-2023 to go through, but of course the takeover is already raising a lot of questions.

Like the one after that, whether big Activision Blizzard franchises like Diablo or Call of Duty will still appear on PS4 and PS5 – or whether they’ll be exclusive to Xbox and PC, as will be the case with many future Bethesda titles.

The events come thick and fast: Just yesterday, Xbox boss and Microsoft gaming CEO Phil Spencer spoke up and said he had no intention of pulling existing gaming communities away from the Sony platform. Which of course remains somewhat vague and can mean different things:

Despite the Activision takeover: Xbox does not want to withdraw communities from other platforms

Despite the Activision takeover: Xbox does not want to withdraw communities from other platforms

But now there is a much clearer and somewhat clearer one surprising statement from Sony. It states first (which is not so surprising) that it is assumed that existing contracts will be honored – despite the takeover.

So roughly the way it is, for example Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo is up and running. But Sony apparently also expects that future Activision games will remain multiplatform and will therefore continue to appear for PlayStation consoles such as PS4 and PS5 in the future.

“We expect Microsoft to honor existing contracts and continue to ensure Activision games are multiplatform.”

What does that mean? It all depends on what exactly these existing contracts say. Sony and Activision may have contractually stipulated for many years that all Call of Duty games must also come for the PlayStation. That there are contracts that say forever and ever that Activision games have to be multiplatform seems very unlikely. Maybe it’s just a few titles and the contracts will expire at some point.

We know that buying Activision Blizzard is a hotly debated topic. We ask you to always have respectful and constructive discussions with one another.

How do you interpret the statement? What games could there be contracts for, what do you think?
