Diablo 2 buffs all classes in the new patch – but a popular build remains “unplayable”

The preliminary patch notes for patch 2.4 in Diablo 2: Resurrected are known. It contains buffs for all 7 classes in the game. However, the barbarian community complains that an important change is missing – and their class therefore remains “unplayable”.

What build is this? The Whirlwind Barbarian (often shortened to “WW-Barb”) is one of the most popular melee builds. He relies on the Whirlwind skill and, in theory, is particularly good at dismantling groups of opponents in close combat.

Whirlwind Barbarians are popular primarily because they are good for solo play. In groups, among Diablo 2’s 7 classes, they are otherwise supportive tanks. They collect opponents and buff their party with their numerous battle cries.

The upcoming patch 2.4, which will soon be tested on the PTR, now has buffs for all classes. But fans say these don’t help the whirlwind barbarian. He remains “bugs and unplayable” because the existing bugs have not been fixed according to the patch notes.

Why is he “unplayable”? Im Diablo 2 official forum writes user DHA about the problems with the build. He lists 4 major issues that make the whirlwind build unplayable, especially in PvP scenarios:

  • After teleporting, Whirlwind will almost always trigger automatically and last until you hit an enemy. This could be endless if the enemy flees.
  • The game doesn’t register the first hits of whirlwind. The frequent use of the skill, as was common in the past, to carry out more attacks, does not work.
  • Ability’s animation will stop if held down instead of scrolling through. So you can be interrupted in between.
  • These interruptions can lead to desynchronization.

The bugs not only affect barbarians, but also assassins who use the skill. They can do this, for example, through the Runeword Chaos, which grants access to the ability. In his video, the YouTuber aaronoob once again shows exactly what the problems look like:

The test on the PTR is designed specifically to find and report such bugs. DHA says these bugs have been known since alpha and has little hope that they will be fixed. It’s not impossible, but patch 2.4 has to be released first.

Patch 2.4 brings the ladder and tons of buffs

This is in the new patch: All classes will be buffed with the upcoming patch 2.4. The barbarian also gets some improvements, but here the screams in particular are strengthened or get new tooltips.

Probably the most important change in the new patch is the ladder. In Diablo 2, Ladders are the same as Seasons are today. You start there with new ladder characters and can compete with other players on a leaderboard.

Along with the ladder come new runewords, as well as set bonuses and recipes for the Horadric Cube. The content is what the core fans of Diablo 2 in particular have been waiting for since release. You can find the full patch notes on the official site.

When is patch 2.4 coming? On January 25th, 2022 the patch will start on the PTR. When exactly it will then be uploaded to the official servers, we cannot say yet. Typically, such tests take up to 4 weeks, depending on the amount of feedback that needs to be implemented.

We therefore expect the patch and the first ladder towards the end of February. In view of the difficulties with the release, it could also take until March. While you wait, here are some dodge games for you:
