Minecraft player put 1,200 hours into a Doom map: “The final boss was the hardest”

Minecraft player named Sibogy has built a cool map inspired by the legendary games in the Doom shooter series. We at MeinMMO asked him about his map.

Countless creative things have been created in Minecraft since its release. From huge works of art to large areas from other games like WoW. Such large projects often take many years and consume a lot of working time. The reddit user Sibogy has also ventured into such a project.

What map is it about? The map that Sibogy created over the course of almost 2 years is called “Doomed: Demons of the Nether”. It is based on the popular shooter franchise Doom by Id Software, whose first game, Doom, revolutionized the genre in 1993.

However, the map is not a copy of the game, but a mixture of several elements from Doom 2016, Doom Eternal and some of Sibogy’s own ideas. It includes 4 levels with boss fights, cut-scenes and collectibles.

The map is available for the Java Edition of Minecraft and can be played directly without downloading mods. You can watch the trailer for it here:

MeinMMO author Irina Moritz found Sibogy’s map so cool that she asked him if he could answer a few questions about it.

2 years of work to make other people have fun

MeinMMO: Hello, could you please introduce yourself to our readers?

Sibogy: Hello, I’m Sibogy, an avid gamer and longtime Minecraft player (started in 2011). I’m from New Zealand and I enjoy creating things in games (especially Minecraft). Kind of like textures and 3D models.

MeinMMO: Why Doom? How did you come up with the idea for this map and what were your first steps?

Sibogy: Funnily enough, DOOM was one of the very first games I played on a Windows 98 computer when I was very young.

After not creating content for Minecraft for many years, I originally wanted to create a map based on Mirror’s Edge. But there was already someone who did it. I tried, but nothing ever came of it. I only worked on it for a week or two.

In March 2020 (when I started the project) DOOM Eternal was about to release, and I replayed DOOM 2016, which got me thinking, “Can I do something like this in Minecraft?”

My first steps were to implement the weapons into the game. I found a great weapon datapack from the creator of NOPEName and used it as a base. Then I programmed new features, created 3D models and reworked the original weapon pack. Then I started to create the first level.

MeinMMO: You said you worked on the map for 2 years (1,200 hours), that’s a lot of time. Many long-term projects are canceled or abandoned. How did you endure?

Sibogy: Almost 2 years, yes. I’ve seen so many long-term projects (mainly by fans) that have been abandoned or where the creators have sort of mouthed off.

That was my main motivation. I never wanted to let my project get into that state of what I call ‘project limbo’ where it stagnates and never finishes.

I didn’t think it would take almost 2 years to develop, but then again I had never done anything that ambitious in Minecraft. My original estimate for release was about a year.

There were many moments of tedious and repetitive development that I felt like putting off work. But I knew that only I could finish it, and if I didn’t work on it, it wouldn’t finish.

I’m a big fan of lists, and I took things one step at a time. This was a good way to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

MeinMMO: What were the most complex things that caused you the most difficulties during development? can you name 3

Sibogy: The limitations of Minecraft itself, without using external mods. Since this project uses the game’s built-in features called “Datapacks” and “Resource Packs”, there were many limitations. Above all, one of them was player input and interaction.

The final boss was probably the most challenging as I had to customize the enemy behavior, 3D models, damage texturing and most importantly the animations. The final boss alone has around 80-90 frames of animation (stop-motion style). The development and implementation of this took two long months.

The double jump gives the player an upward boost while in the air, but unfortunately it’s inconsistent. This is because Minecraft’s tick rate is unstable and volatile. This means that some of the jumps are very high and others are much lower than expected, which can result in the player falling off a cliff. This is frustrating (Happened to me many times).

MeinMMO: Although your map is based on Doom, it is not a 1:1 copy of the game. What parts are still the same and what changes have you made compared to the original? Were there any ideas that had to be discarded?

Sibogy: The beginning of Level 1 is very similar to the beginning of Doom 2016. But I found copying straight from Doom boring, so I created my own level design for the rest of the map.

Doom 2016, on which the level themes are mainly based, does not have a super gore nest. It’s an idea I borrowed from Eternal. The player uses it to go to the demon dimension (the nether) in my map.

And yes, there was an idea for glory kills, but it was too difficult, time consuming, and buggy to actually integrate into the game. I used the chainsaw instead to get health and ammo from enemies.

At the end of our interview, Sibogy gave a tip for Minecraft fans who also want to try such projects:

Sibogy: My advice is to not overdo it for the first project and take things one step at a time to reach your end goal.

My personal goal, which I always had in mind, was to sit back and watch other people enjoy what I created. And it was all worth it.

“Two of my favorite games! I love it!”

This is how the map arrives: Sibogy gets a lot of applause for his work on reddit and in the YouTube comments. Many Minecraft fans are impressed that he built the map without mods. The launch trailer has over 40,000 views on YouTube with over 1,800 upvotes.

the appropriate one Doom map thread on reddit has over 35,000 upvotes. The creator received numerous awards and accolades from the users.

  • “I’m already in the third level. Such a great fan game!” – Leaping Frog
  • “It was just recommended to me. Looks impressive, great work!” – Nikolai Ludovik
  • “I can’t wait to play it!” – Noodles
  • “I can’t imagine how much work and dedication went into it. GG.” – Skyraider703 (1,139 upvotes)

There is now a ladder for Doomed: Demons of the Nether that speedrunners can climb to win first place.
