Airbnb offers free house in Italy for a year. Do you want to participate?

Airbnb is looking for someone with an adventurous spirit who is passionate about travel and hospitality. The selected person will live for a year in a renovated Sicilian house totally free and will be able to host people.

With telecommuting on the rise and the opportunity to do it anywhere in the world, this Airbnb initiative seems more than attractive. His proposition is simple: free house in the village of Sambuca, Sicily (Italy), for a year, with the enormous advantage of being able to keep the benefits of hosting other people (being a host).

Sambuca has seen its population decrease remarkably during the last decades. To turn the situation around, in 2018, the municipality promoted the campaign “Houses at 1 euro” in order to promote the cultural heritage of the area, encourage foreign investment and attract young people.

This town it has 6,000 inhabitants and is located 18 kilometers from the sea and about 80 kilometers south of Palermo. It is characterized by a mixture of Italian and North African cultures and architectural styles. It was named in 2016 the most beautiful village in Sicily.

“We are looking for someone who wants to live like a local: interact with the locals and participate in important community events, such as the grape harvest or the olive harvest”, affirm from the platform.

The floor that is offered is totally reformed by the Italian architecture studio Studio Didea who transformed the house using local materials, creating a first floor with a small living room along with a master bedroom that includes a king-size bed and en-suite bathroom.

The second floor features a living room, kitchen, workspace, bathroom, and mezzanine bedroom with a queen-size bed, while the top floor offers additional space with a sofa bed.

“What’s wonderful about this campaign is that it not only gives a second chance to a derelict townhouse that is part of the local heritage, but also to the person moving in. We see it as a change of scenery wrapped in design for the property and the host”, said Leonardo Ciaccio, mayor of Sambuca.

Assuming the pandemic allows it, the stay will start on June 30 this year. Candidates must be at least 18 years old. What’s more, It will be mandatory for the selected person to stay in the town for at least 3 months and share a private room in the home through Airbnb for a minimum of 9 months.
