Guild Wars 2 brings new expansion in February – but the missing release date worries fans

Guild Wars 2 will get the new expansion End of Dragons in February. But although February starts next week, there is still no release date. Many fans fear a postponement or at least a lack of hype.

What is the problem? The new expansion End of Dragons is in the starting blocks. Most recently, we even tried out the first content from MeinMMO and wrote down our experience. It has also been clear since July 2021 that End of Dragons will be released in February 2022. But the developers were not more specific.

Recently there have been some new tweets, including a video and a post about the pre-order. Both continue to talk about the release “in February”. However, many players are wondering why there is no specific release date yet, after all, February will start next week.

In reddit and in social media such as Twitter and Facebook, there are now concerns that the release could be postponed again. Many see no other reason why there is no specific date yet.

In addition, the mood among the fans is slowly changing because they hype themselves for the expansion and sometimes even want to take vacations. But that’s not possible without a release date.

Fans fear a lack of hype or an unfinished expansion

What are the players afraid of? There are currently two threads on the Guild Wars 2 reddit that revolve around the topic:

  • One featured a now-deleted tweet from developer Josh “Grouch” Davis. There it says that the announcement of the release date is a “big moment” that has to go “far beyond the regular audience”.
  • The other is titled “It’s okay if the February release isn’t set in stone, but then just tell us”. There, a user talks about the fact that a postponement becomes more likely the longer the developers do not commit to a specific date.

In the thread surrounding the tweet, there is a lot of ridicule for the marketing team, precisely because there is no release date yet.

However, Guild Wars 2 fans voice their concerns in both threads. And they are very different:

  • For example, one user writes that it is already too late to generate real hype outside of the fan bubble. After all, February is so packed that people have already planned their time.
  • Some users complain that they can no longer take vacation for the release because the time window is now getting too short.
  • Still other users criticize that they themselves are losing the hype because there are not enough concrete statements. They worry that when the expansion comes out in February, it might be unfinished just to get the month of February.
  • One user also said that ArenaNet could have just put a late date in February and if they finished earlier they would still have time to do more testing.

Are there also positive voices? Yes, the user Lordkrall is sure with a release in February:

You have repeatedly confirmed in the last few weeks that it will be released in February. Why would they do that if they weren’t sure they could do it? If unsure, they would not say February or next month, but rather soon or in the near future.

Some other users also see the situation more relaxed, also because many expect the extension – like the other two before it – to appear on a Friday and thus remain the weekend for gambling.

Do you have a big story transition planned for January?

What other explanation is there? In the meantime, a small theory has spread on reddit that revolves around the Lunar New Year. This is an annual event celebrating the Chinese New Year, starting on January 25th.

According to the theory, there could be a special story event at the event that the developers don’t want to spoil in advance and that is somehow related to the release date. After all, the new expansion leads to the Asian continent of Cantha.

However, this theory would contradict the statement by developer Grouch, according to which the release date should reach a larger mass of people than just the core players.

Why do you think ArenaNet is taking so long with the date? Do you also fear a postponement?
