Apple fined 5 million euros per week in the Netherlands
Apple has been fined €5 million per week until it fixes this problem with third-party payments.
Apple and the App Store are being the subject of a major investigation in many countries due to the lack of alternatives to official Apple payment methods, and that just cost the company a fine in the Netherlands. According to the Dutch authority, Apple has not done enough to regulate App Store payments affecting dating apps in the Netherlands, a decision that has cost the company €5 million.
Apple confirmed that it would comply with the order of the Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) to allow dating apps operating in the country to use third-party payment mechanisms. However, the ACM believes that Apple has not yet fully complied with the rule and has fined the company.
Fine for not offering sufficiently clear payment alternatives
Apple had until January 15 to provide developers with other ways to pay within dating apps. Apple allowed developers add a link within the application that took you to a website to complete purchases, thus offering the option of using a third-party payment system.
However, the ACM says that Apple fails “on several points”, the most serious being that Apple “has not adjusted its conditions, as a result of which dating app providers are still not allowed to use other payment systems”. Apple states on its support page that developers will be able to apply for one of two new payment authorizations, but they don’t appear to be available at this time.
The 5 million euros is only an initial fine, if Apple does not solve this, the ACM will put the same fine weekly, up to a maximum of 50 million euros. And this seems only the beginning, probably more countries will join and force Apple to offer other payment systems within the apps.
