Horizon Forbidden West – Playing time: That’s about how long the story lasts

This is the approximate playing time of Horizon Forbidden West.
This is the approximate playing time of Horizon Forbidden West.

GamePro was not only able to allude to Horizon Forbidden West before the release on February 18, 2022, but also asked game director Mathijs de Jonge all kinds of questions. Among other things, we now know the approximate playing time of the open world adventure for PS4 and PS5.

How long is the story of Horizon Forbidden West?

The simple answer: according to Mathijs de Jonge, roughly as long as that of its predecessor.

The game time of Horizon Zero Dawn (according to Howlongtobeat.com):

  • Main story – 22h and 50min
  • Main Story + Extras – 45h and 21min
  • Completionists – 61 hours and 20 minutes

However, the total scope of Forbidden West should be slightly larger than that of its predecessor. Completionists, i.e. everyone who wants to complete the game 100 percent, will be busy a little longer. Exactly how much is not yet known.

Of course, we won’t be able to name the specific playing time of Horizon Zero Dawn until we’ve finished the title itself. We will then adjust this article accordingly.

Known side activities in Horizon Forbidden West

In addition to the main story and many side quests, you can again complete typical open world activities in Horizon Forbidden West, which of course also increase the playing time. We already know some of them from Horizon Zero Dawn, while others are new. Included among others:

  • Langhälse: Machines with long necks scattered throughout the open world that we must climb to gradually uncover the map and/or reveal nearby quests and activities
  • ruins: Special locations to explore that hold small puzzles for us
  • Arena: Here we compete against machines on different levels of difficulty and collect arena points that we can exchange for rare outfits and other items
  • Fighting Pit: Another battle arena, but here we only fight in close combat

This is how Horizon Forbidden West plays

GamePro was able to play the Horizon Zero Dawn successor around three and a half hours in advance as part of a Europe-exclusive hands-on. And we’re excited. In our preview you will find out why Horizon Forbidden West could even surpass the debut.

Release: Horizon Forbidden West will be released on February 18, 2022 for PS4 and PS5.
