WoW: In patch 9.2 you have to unlock flies again – Here’s how

In World of Warcraft patch 9.2 you can fly again – but not from the beginning. We reveal what you have to do for the flight skill this time.

Patch 9.2 End of Eternity is slowly but surely emerging on the horizon. Blizzard is still changing a lot with each new version of the PTR, but little by little the content seems to be finalizing. Adjustments have now been made again to how you can unlock flying in Patch 9.2. As usual, this speeds up your travel speed and game progression.

Where does flying have to be unlocked? Only in the new area of Zereth Mortis. The zone is only accessible with patch 9.2 and must be entered on foot for the first few days. You can only fly there after a while, so that all players can only explore the area on foot or with ground mounts at first. Flying in the rest of Shadowlands has been available for a while.

How do you unlock flying? As is so often the case, the ability to fly in Zereth Mortis is tied to an achievement currently called “Unlocking the Secrets”. This is a meta-achievement, meaning several sub-achievements must be completed in order to unlock it. In total, that’s six minor achievements that must be collected in order to fly.

What do I have to do? Even if six achievements sounds like a lot, most tasks are relatively quick to complete, as you can see here:

  • Explore Zereth Mortis: Reveals the entire map of Zereth Mortis, except for the island where the Mausoleum of the First raid can be found.
  • Curious Collections: Discover 5 different, hidden treasures in Zereth Mortis
  • Path to Enlightenment: Complete three side quest lines on Zereth Mortis.
  • Tales of the Exile: Read all of the Firim in Exile books available in Zereth Mortis.
  • Adventures in Zereth Mortis: Defeat 10 of the special battles in Zereth Mortis (Rare Enemies).
  • A Means to an End: Complete the Zereth Mortis campaign through Chapter 5.

At first glance, this may seem like a lot of work, but you should be able to complete most of these achievements by day 1 or 2 at the latest if you are questing in Zereth Mortis. Treasures and rare enemies can be found “in passing” and the side quests and books are also found along the way. Only the last step will only be possible with the beginning of week 3, since the 5th story chapter will be accessible in the third week.

As a rule, you should be able to fly in patch 9.2 after 15 days (the start of week 3).

Does every character have to unlock this? No. Progress toward the Unlocking the Secrets achievement is account-wide. As soon as you fulfill the requirements with one character – for example your main character – then these requirements are also completed on all other characters. So you can fly with all characters in Zereth Mortis and only have to complete the achievement once.

What do you think about the fact that you have to unlock flying for the new area first? A good solution because it is relatively quick? Or should Shadowlands flying have counted directly here?
