Apple does not cheat users with the iPhone’s water resistance

A US judge sees no evidence that Apple cheats with the water resistance of iPhones.

A federal judge in the United States has dismissed a class action lawsuit that accused Apple of misleading users about the iPhone’s water resistance. iPhones have been water resistant for a long time, however, in the event that they are damaged by getting wet, the official Apple guarantee does not cover these damages.

The plaintiffs, two from New York and one from South Carolina, claimed that the Apple’s “false and misleading” claims about iPhone water resistance made the company charge twice as much for iPhones as the cost of an “average smartphone.”

However, Judge Denise Cote ruled that there was no evidence that Apple’s claims were misleading and, moreover, the plaintiffs had also failed to demonstrate that their purchase decisions were based on this claim by Apple.

A federal judge on Wednesday threw out a proposed class action lawsuit that accused Apple Inc. of misleading consumers about its iPhones’ resistance to water exposure.

Water resistance is always in question

Most smartphones today, not just the iPhone, are waterproof. In concert the latest iPhone models They have IP68 resistance, which allows the iPhone to be submerged up to 4 meters deep for 30 minutes without suffering any damage. But nevertheless, no company is responsible for water damage that your devices may suffer.

Despite being waterproof, Apple does not report that they are submersible, although soon they could be. and it really is very difficult to prove if an iPhone has been submerged to the depth and for the time that Apple indicates, or has done it more. We know of cases where Apple has refused to fix wet iPhones and others where it has.

What is the difference between IP67 and IP68 water resistance?

In countries like Italy, this has caused Apple millions in fines, it has also happened to others like Samsung, however in this case in the US the claim has been dismissed. It’s complex, and while there’s evidence that iPhones can stay underwater for a long time, it’s not something we recommend doing.
