EA has apparently noticed that NFTs are not well received

FIFA would theoretically be perfect for adding NFTs to an EA game.

Electronic Arts seems to be turning away from the idea of using NFTs (Non-Fungible-Token) “digital property” in games across the board – at least for now. At an investor conference, CEO Andrew Wilson now explains that EA does not want to make any major efforts at the moment and it remains to be seen whether more will be done with regard to NFTs and the blockchain in the future. It is particularly interesting that it sounded very different three months ago.

EA is suddenly reluctant to comment on NFTs

That’s what it’s about: EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson is skeptical about NFTs in and around the publisher’s games. This comes as a bit of a surprise because it sounds like a 180-degree turnaround. Three months ago, things looked very different at EA, when NFTs were called “the future”, like that GameStar reported.

In any case, the word now is that while “collectability” is still very important, whether it should be pushed in the context of NFTs and blockchain technology is still in the stars. This does not mean that NFTs are completely rejected, but there is no longer any trace of the former enthusiasm:

“We’ll evaluate that over time, but right now it’s not something we’re pushing hard.”

Response to NFTs may be the reason

Most likely, the initial enthusiasm has been dampened by the massive backlash that is being thrown at all companies by players who want to offer NFTs. There were quite a few in the last few weeks and months, and many of them quickly rowed back.

The Stalker 2 makers announced NFTs and canceled them again within a very short time. The The Last of Us Voice Actor Troy Baker also wanted to use NFTs and received such severe criticism for it that he backtracked as well. Also the Worms-Publisher Team 17 changed his mind within a very short time after entire studios announced that they were ending their collaboration because of this. No wonder, since the majority of developers don’t seem to be interested in NFTs:

Ubisoft, on the other hand, remains firm despite the heavy criticism and uses surprisingly offensive formulations to defend NFTs: The fans would “just not understand the whole thing”. GameStop hasn’t backed down either, as have Square Enix, Take Two, Konami, and Zynga. All of them have at least expressed an interest in selling NFTs in the future.
