The Freestyle, Samsung’s compact and portable projector, arrives in Spain: waste of originality at 999 euros

In the current market we can find many compact and portable projectors, but, on paper, this Samsung proposal stands out from all of them for its originality. And any device that represents a breath of fresh air against its competitors is very welcome.

Its peculiar cylindrical shape seems to hint that The Freestyle is a peculiar projector, and there is no doubt that its lightness (weighs 700g) works in your favor. However, some of the qualities that make it different are its ability to project at almost any angle and on any surface.

In fact, Samsung claims that it has been designed to show a sharp image both on a smooth wall, on the ceiling, or even on a tiled wall, thanks to its automatic focus. Sounds good, but it seems like a bit of a bold statement, so we prefer to quarantine it until we have a chance to test it.

More surprises: it levels itself and incorporates a smart speaker

Its heart is a DLP chip with Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 points), and its light source is LED. It has been designed to allow us to project images with a size of up to 100 inches, it is compatible with HDR and HLG content, which, interestingly, we can send it from our mobile, and it has a dynamic contrast ratio of 100,000:1. They are not stunning specifications, but they fit like a glove in a projector of this type.

It is also worth noting that it incorporates a smart speaker with an output power of 5 watts designed to recreate a 360 degree sound scene. On paper it seems like an interesting option to improvise a small home theater that works almost anywhere.

In addition, its operating system is Tizen and it implements voice assistants Bixby, Alexa y Google Assistant, so in theory the experience that its interface offers us should be similar to that offered by the latest generation of Samsung televisions.

In any case, the features that have surprised us the most are the possibility of connecting this projector wirelessly to a Samsung TV so that the latter delivers the video signal from the DTT tuner (even if the TV is off), and the auto-leveling function.

And it is that according to Samsung this projector is capable of automatically correcting any unevenness of the surface on which we place it with the purpose of projecting a straight and harmonic image. One last note: an external battery from Samsung itself will also be optionally available, although this projector can coexist with any USB-PD battery that has an output of 50 watts and 20 volts or higher.

Samsung The Freestyle: price and availability

Samsung has confirmed that this portable projector will hit stores during the first week of March with a price of 999 euros. A case will also be available that will cost 59 euros and an external battery whose price has not yet been revealed.
