Lord of the Rings fans are looking forward to a major update – but are experiencing every MMORPG player’s nightmare

The MMORPG Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) was completely down for a day after the anniversary update due to problems. Now the servers are back online, but player progress has been reset to the morning of the update. The developers of the MMORPG went to extremes: they rolled back.

What exactly are the players losing now? Standing Stone Games is the development studio behind Lord of the Rings Online. They announced now after the anniversary update that they had to reset the progression of the game worlds.

The progress of the substance has been reset to the status of Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at 1 p.m. German time.

The servers went offline in Germany at 05:00 in the morning on April 21st. So players who played between 1pm and 5am the next day will lose the progress they made in the 16 hours.

Why were the servers offline? When LOTRO’s Anniversary Update was released, there were numerous reports of missing Rune-Keeper Legendary item satchels. It appeared to be a major bug, which is why the game worlds were shut down.

Standing Stone Games, meanwhile, regularly released information updates stating that they are working to fix the issue. We hope to be able to start up the game world again soon.

The servers then started up after a day of downtime on April 21st.

According to Standing Stones Games, you will find the missing items after logging into the game world. You will not get back any progress lost as a result of the rollback.

What happens to store purchases? According to Standing Stone Games, if you made a purchase from the LOTRO store while the servers were offline, your purchases will be automatically refunded.

What happens to lost anniversary gifts? According to Standing Stone Games, if you’ve already claimed your LOTRO 15th Anniversary Gifts, you’ll get them again the next time you log in.

Why is rollback a nightmare for MMORPG players? A rollback is the worst thing that can happen to an MMORPG and its players because they lose time invested.

This represents a breach of the unwritten contract between players and developers of an MMORPG, according to which any progress made is permanent and “counts.”
