Motorola introduces mid-range phones Moto G 5G and Moto G Stylus 5G

Motorola has presented two new mid-range smartphones: the cheaper Moto G 5G and the more powerful Moto G Stylus 5G. The latter is a better equipped version of the Moto G Stylus 2022 with 5G support. Surprisingly, the new Motos do without OLED screens.

The Moto G Stylus 5G aims to impress buyers with its 6.8-inch, 120 Hertz display. The IPS display offers an FHD+ resolution and can be operated with the included stylus. Compared to its predecessor, the 5G version of the Moto G Stylus has the faster Snapdragon 695 Notebookcheck with reference to the manufacturer. The main memory is 8 GB, and buyers can choose between 128 GB and 256 GB of internal memory.

Typical mid-range specs, but…

The Moto G Stylus 5G also has a 16-megapixel front camera. On the back is a triple camera consisting of a 50-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor for the bokeh effect in portraits. The battery has a capacity of 5,000 mAh and can only be charged quite slowly with 10 watts of power. Also on board: a fingerprint sensor on the side of the smartphone and a jack connection.

The Moto G 5G shares some specifications with the Moto G Stylus 5G, such as battery capacity, charging performance, fingerprint sensor and jack connection. However, the rest of the equipment is different. The IPS display of the Moto G 5G measures 6.6 inches and offers a resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels, the refresh rate is 90 Hertz. A MediaTek Dimensity 700 is used as the processor, which is supported by 8 GB of RAM. The internal memory is either 64 GB or 256 GB.

The Moto G 5G has a 13-megapixel front camera and also a triple camera on the back. This consists of a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 2-megapixel macro sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor.

… surprising prices

The specifications of the Moto G Stylus 5G and Moto G 5G are the norm for mid-range smartphones. In relation to this, however, the price is unusual. In the US, the cheapest version of the Moto G Stylus 5G costs $499 (approx. 459 euros) and the Moto G 5G costs 399 US dollars (approx. 367 euros). In this price range, other manufacturers often offer superior hardware such as OLED displays, more powerful processors or faster fast charging. These are well-equipped alternatives Samsung Galaxy A53 5Gthat Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G and the Realme GT 5G.

Another shortcoming compared to the competition are the Android updates. Both smartphones appear with Android 12, but Motorola only promises buyers a single operating system update. After all, there should be security updates for “up to three years”. It is not yet known whether the two Motorola smartphones will also appear in Europe. At the current prices, however, the devices will have a hard time against the competition.
