WoW: When is the release of the new addon Dragonflight?

Dragonflight will be the new addon for World of Warcraft. But when is the release? When can we finally explore the Dragon Islands?

The reveal of World of Warcraft’s next expansion, Dragonflight, was received relatively well by players. But in addition to all the information about the new continent “Dragon Islands”, the caller of the Dracthyr or dragon riding, one important piece of information was completely missing: the release date of Dragonflight.

That’s pretty unusual.

When is a realistic release date for Dragonflight? Even if Blizzard has not yet revealed an official release date for WoW: Dragonflight, one can already make some speculations.

Because we already know that Shadowlands will get another “season 4”. The current season 3 has only been running for a few months and will probably continue for a while.

WoW: Here is the bombastic cinematic for the new Dragonflight expansion

If you now roughly estimate that season 3 will run at least until July and season 4 for at least 5-6 months, then we have already arrived in 2023. The earliest release date would be Q1 in 2023.

If there are delays or the developers want to take more time – which would probably do WoW good – it could also be quarter 2, i.e. the period April – June 2023.

If you want to play the new WoW addon before launch, you should sign up for the Dragonflight beta.

Why is the absence of the date unusual? As a rule, the announcement of a new expansion of World of Warcraft goes hand in hand with the possibility of being able to pre-order the addon directly. That was not the case with Dragonflight. The fact is quite surprising, because it seems that the pre-order items are already included in the patch 9.2 game data on the live servers.

So why shouldn’t Blizzard start pre-ordering right away and capitalize on the hype of the announcement to cash in on the pre-order fans directly?

One can only speculate about this, but one assumption is particularly obvious here:

Blizzard has not yet planned an exact release date and is not even roughly sure when the expansion will be released.

That seems to be the most obvious answer, at least, and would also go well with another fact: In some countries, Blizzard – and all other digital goods providers – are required by law to provide a delivery date. If this is not possible, this can lead to problems, as was the case with Warcraft III: Reforged.

On the other hand, it is quite possible that Blizzard would like to pre-order Dragonflight for another game. After all, the long-awaited “Warcraft Mobile” will be announced in May. It would at least be conceivable that Blizzard wants to do a little “cross-promotion” here and link the pre-order of Dragonflight to bonuses or beta access to the mobile game, for example.

Of course, there is only complete certainty once Blizzard opens the pre-order for Dragonflight. We will of course report on this as soon as this is the case.
