The Xbox Series X/S has surpassed the PS5 for the first time – says Microsoft

Xbox has reason to celebrate.

Microsoft hasn’t published sales figures for their Xbox systems for a long time. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the brand has been lagging behind the Playstation and the Nintendo Switch for a long time, but on the other hand it is also due to the fact that hardware no longer plays a very important role in the publisher’s plans. However, the most recent quarterly financial report catches the eye, claiming that the Xbox Series X/S will lead the next-gen this year.

The Xbox Series X/S is doing so well

Microsoft was able to convert $3.74 billion in the first quarter of 2022 (January to March) with the Xbox department. This is an increase of 6 percent compared to the previous year. According to CEO Satya Nadella, the company was able to gain market share for the second time in a row (via Eurogamer). According to business insider Daniel Ahmad, Xbox is even celebrating its best non-holiday quarter ever.

Xbox before Playstation: More importantly for Microsoft, so far in 2022 they are “the market leaders among next-gen consoles in the US, Canada, Western Europe and the UK.” In short: The Xbox Series X/S brought in more money than the PS5 in the first quarter of the year. Microsoft probably does not count the switch among the next-gen devices.

Potential not yet exhausted: Let’s be honest, the new console generation hasn’t really started for Microsoft yet – at least as far as the software is concerned. Most of the many studios that have joined (and will join) the Xbox team in recent months and years have either only been able to produce small or no exclusive titles for the Xbox Series X/S. The coming years will show how much Game Pass and exclusives like Starfield will strengthen the console.

How meaningful are the numbers really?

There is one big BUT when we talk about the sales figures of the new consoles: Both Microsoft and Sony cannot produce enough consoles to meet the demand at the moment due to the shortage of semiconductor chips. That means we don’t know exactly how many devices the manufacturers could actually sell. Despite all that, Microsoft’s internal step-up shows that the Xbox Series X/S is on the right track.
