PS5 surprise: VRR provides a rich frame rate boost for some games
The update for the PlayStation 5 has been available for a few days, which finally makes the Sony console VRR-capable. If you activate this “Variable Refresh Rate” – and also have a display that also supports VRR – your console’s image refresh sequence can synchronize with that of your screen, which ensures a quieter overall and fewer image errors such as tearing.
But apparently VRR also has another nice side effect. Because like the first tech analysts, including those of Youtuber El Analista De Bitsshow that VRR on the PS5 also provides a sometimes very significant frame rate boost for some games.
Examples of titles with framerate boost by VRR
game (mode) | Frame rate without VRR | Frame rate with VRR |
Spider-Man: Remastered (Fidelity) | 30 fps | up to 59 fps |
Spider-Man: Remastered (RT Performance) | 60 fps | up to 95 fps |
Spider-Man: Miles Morales (Performance) | 60 fps | up to 70 fps |
Spider-Man: Miles Morales (RT Performance) | 60 fps | up to 70 fps |

Notable Numbers: With Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Devil May Cry 5 in particular, activating VRR almost doubles the frame rate in some cases. However, it should be pointed out here that these are peak values and that the average fps values level off somewhat below. Of course, the boost is still a noticeable improvement.
VRR support so far only for a handful of games
If you are already looking forward to starting your older favorites again thanks to the VRR update and enjoying them with optimized fps numbers, be warned. Because so far only a few titles are compatible with VRR.

In the menu you can set that VRR should also be activated for titles that are not supported, but according to Sony this can lead to unsightly graphic errors. In the future, however, it can be expected that new games will also offer VRR support right from the start.
