Good monitor for a small budget: Acer CB242Y

With the Acer CB242Y you get a 24-inch monitor with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. It has an IPS panel that also displays colors stable when viewed from the side. Stiftung Warentest gave the monitor an overall rating of “good” (2.0) in issue 9/2021.

The screen supports a refresh rate of 75 Hertz for a smoother moving image display compared to the conventional 60 Hertz and it has a response time of 1 millisecond, which avoids streaks during fast movements in games. AMD graphics card owners benefit from FreeSync, which displays moving images without cracks. These are all good prerequisites for playing games from shooters to building strategy smoothly. Of course, office applications can also be displayed with the monitor without any problems.

You don’t need the latest hardware for the Acer CB242Y, you can also operate it with a slightly older PC – an advantage given the high hardware prices. The model has an HDMI, a DisplayPort and a VGA connection. However, only a refresh rate of 60 Hz is possible via VGA. If possible, try to connect your PC to the monitor via HDMI or DisplayPort. Practical: the monitor can be rotated, tilted and adjusted in height, you can even rotate it 90 degrees and use it upright.

If you love gaming, this monitor is for you. For responsive games like “Fortnite” and “Call of Duty” you benefit from a model with a high refresh rate – here it comes Viewsonic XG2705-2K with 144 hertz just right. With a decent graphics card, you can send up to 144 frames per second to the monitor, which ensures a smooth and rapid display. All this on a 27-inch IPS panel with stable viewing angles, which presents content sharply thanks to a WQHD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels.

You can connect your PC to the Viewsonic monitor via one of the two HDMI 2.0 ports or the DisplayPort 1.2 port. If you have an AMD graphics card, you can use FreeSync Premium. This means that the monitor and graphics card are optimally matched to one another, which is particularly noticeable when gaming: Nothing jerks and there are no image tears, everything runs smoothly. Also fine: the good ergonomics. You can rotate, tilt, adjust the height of the screen and use it upright.

Suitable for all applications: The BenQ PD2705Q

If you are looking for a monitor for image processing & office, but also gamble in your free time, you will with the BenQ PD2705Q happy. Its WQHD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels displays images, films and games pin-sharp on 27 inches. However, the response time of 5 milliseconds is a bit slow for fast online games. More leisurely games like “Anno 1800” or “Stellaris” can be enjoyed with this screen without any problems.

The greatest strength of the BenQ monitor is the true-color image in the classic sRGB color space. Pantone validation means that it displays colors true to the original out of the box. So if you like editing photos, the monitor is a very good choice.

You connect the BenQ PD2705Q to your computer either via the DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 or USB Type-C connection. This model scores in our monitor comparison with real multitasking features: You can connect two computers to the monitor at the same time – a desktop computer via DisplayPort and a laptop via USB-C, which is charged immediately.

The integrated KVM switch ensures that you only need one set of mouse and keyboard: You can easily switch back and forth between PC and laptop at the push of a button. The ergonomics are also convincing: You can rotate, tilt, adjust the height of the monitor and operate it upright.

Of the Samsung Odyssey G9 is an absolute specialty in our monitor comparison: It offers immersion in a class of its own. The 49-inch ultrawide monitor offers you an amazing amount of space for all applications – be it browser windows, films or games. With a resolution of 5,120 x 1,440 pixels, every image is beautifully sharp on this huge curved surface.

The refresh rate of 240 Hertz and the response time of 1 millisecond make gaming on this monitor a pure pleasure. Also because it displays games smoothly and without image tears thanks to FreeSync Premium Pro and G-Sync Compatible certification.

However, you need strong hardware for this unique screen, because the high resolution and refresh rate of the Odysey G9 requires a lot of performance. A snappy graphics card like that Geforce RTX 3070 is the minimum. You can even split the screen in half and use different PCs on the left and right sides. The G9 has two DisplayPort connectors and one HDMI connector.

You can adjust the height of the monitor and rotate and tilt it slightly, but the ergonomic options have their limits due to the format.
