Pirate MMO Skull and Bones leaks first gameplay – Reminiscent of Assassin's Creed IV

Ubisoft’s Skull and Bones pirate game has been in development for 6 years. A leaked trailer now shows gameplay for the first time, which is strongly reminiscent of Assassin’s Creed IV: The Black Flag.

The leak shows: After many years of radio silence, there is now new information about the missing multiplayer game, Skull and Bones, from Ubisoft. A reddit user leaked a full 6 minutes of gameplay footage in the subreddit r/GamingLeaksandRumours.

The video shows a “Technical Test Build” of the game accompanied with commentary on features and gameplay and appears to be some kind of unreleased trailer. The gameplay, animations and UI are very reminiscent of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Originally Skull and Bones was actually going to be an AC4 spin-off, but it was expanded to be a standalone game.

The game’s setting puts you in the Indian Ocean during the “golden age of piracy”. You start out as a little unknown pirate and work your way up by plundering other ships, hoarding treasure and generally behaving like a real pirate.

  • You can do quests that give you loot and reputation alone or in groups of up to three players
  • There will be world events for players to participate in
  • A crafting system allows you to create new ships, outfits, ammunition and provisions for your travels
  • You can collect resources such as wood and valuable minerals along the way, or hunt animals to get meat and leather
  • A mood system shows you how good your crew is at the moment. If you don’t take care of them, they can mutiny and take over the ship
  • Your ship can be equipped with cannons and customized to specific needs

If you lose your ship, you also lose some of the reputation and goods you plundered. You can collect this part again by returning to the place where your ship went down, but other players can do the same.

How reliable is this leak? Ubisoft has already confirmed that the leak is footage of Skull and Bones. Opposite Kotaku Ubisoft announced:

We confirm that it’s a sneak peek of our upcoming game, Skull and Bones. We recently ran a technical test for the game and some details of it have been released. These video footage were from an early version of the game and do not reflect the quality and features of the final game. We’ll be sharing more details about the game soon.

The information from the leak should therefore be treated with caution, as it is not clear which features will make it into the finished game.

When is Skull and Bones coming out? There is still no release date and no approximate time window when the game could appear. After Skull and Bones was postponed several times and even rebooted in 2020, the chances of an early release are rather slim.

However, the game’s official Twitter account tweeted after the leak that players should “keep their eyes on the horizon.” And according to Ubisoft’s PR statement, there should be new official information “soon”.
