Sony: Quarterly figures: PS5 scratches the 20 million mark

Sony (Unternehmen) von Sony

Like Nintendo, Sony also announced its figures for the last quarter and thus the past financial year today. There is information about console sales, PS Plus subscribers and profit.

In the almost year and a half between the PS5 release in November 2020 and the end of the last financial year on March 31, 2022, Sony was able to sell 19.3 million PS5 consoles; 7.8 million of these are from the previous year and 11.5 from last year. Of course, it would be interesting to see how much higher sales would have been if every interested customer had received a PlayStation 5. In the meantime, not so much is happening with the PS4: Only around one million units of the previous hardware went over the counter; the total number of 117 million consoles remains impressive, of course.

Sony’s net profit is falling, but is still impressive: while it was 7.5 billion euros in the previous financial year, this time it was still 6.4 billion. Operating profit (8.7 billion) and sales (72 billion) even increased compared to the period before. The numbers for the PS Plus service are stagnating at an impressive level: the 47.6 million paying customers of the previous year were 47.4 million as of March 31, 2022.

We close with a look at the software side: There is no title breakdown of the most successful games à la Nintendo, but there are worldwide software sales figures from the Sony cosmos: In the past financial year there were 303 million games, compared to the period before (339 million) means a noticeable decrease; Downloads accounted for 66 percent of game sales.
