For those suffering from a chronic lack of storage space, Western Digital offers relief. With the DC H670 UltraSMR, the manufacturer has introduced a new HDD (= Hard Disk Drive) that includes up to 26 TB of storage.
The 3.5-inch drive is filled with helium, which should further reduce the friction between the individual 2.6 TB disks. Only in this way was it possible to accommodate up to nine rotating disks on a hard disk.
In addition to the discs, Western Digital built a 512 MB DRAM cache and a three-stage motor into the HDDs, which is intended to save energy and prevent wear. In addition, a technology called “OptiNAND” is on board, which should enable up to 40 percent more IOPS (= input/output operations per second).
In addition to the 26 TB DC HC670 UltraSMR, Western Digital also has the slightly smaller DC HC570 with up to 22 TB in its luggage. Both models are expected to appear later this year. New hard drives from the WD Red Pro, Purple and Gold series, also with up to 22 TB, are also planned.
