CoD Warzone’s Godzilla event disappoints expectations – Big monsters, but promises that are too big

All fan eyes were on Call of Duty: Warzone’s big Godzilla event. It finally went online on the evening of May 11th. And unfortunately falls through with many players. MeinMMO author Maik Schneider collects reactions and shows why you should still take a look.

What’s happening at Warzone? In the current Season 3 of Call of Duty: Warzone, the monsters are loose. The big event “Operation: Monarch” is currently online and in a time-limited mode King Kong and Godzilla are rampaging on the map Caldera.

2 huge NPCs roam the island, wreaking havoc, destruction and can even help crush your enemies.

But the reactions to the visit of the titans in the free Battle Royale are not exactly great. And that’s not necessarily due to the event itself, but to the expectations raised in advance.

MeinMMO summarizes some reactions and gives an insight why you should still watch the class reunion of the popular giants.

Marketing vs Reality – Warzone overdid it

Why are players disappointed? Warzone sent trailers ahead and advertised the event for a few weeks. Some images created certain expectations that are a fair bit removed from the real event.

The biggest thread today in the Warzone sub-reddit illustrates the problem:

A trailer showed the two titans attacking each other. In event mode, however, the two critters act completely independently of each other. No sign of a fight between the two.

The event also falls short of expectations in terms of general interaction with the environment. In the trailer, King Kong can be seen dragging a plane from the sky to the ground.

But actually Kong just jumps from one point to another on the map, thrashing around a bit and throwing stones.

Another point is a burning volcano in the trailer. That pointed to another map change, or at least a map event during Titans matches. But there is no trace of lava or volcanic explosions.

“The event can’t keep up with the hype”

What are the reactions? The fan account Modern Warzone started a poll on Twitter to ask if the event is a W or an L – W stands for “Win” (win), L stands for Lose (loss). After 13 hours of survey, the result is pretty clear:

Of 17,755 votes, 70.8% voted for an L (as of May 12, 10:00 a.m.). The mood speaks accordingly rather against the event.

The comments under the survey are more divided, however. There are also many users who support the event. Here are a few qualifying comments:

  • @hobo_nick: “Marketing raised expectations, developers didn’t live up to them. The volcano should explode. The monsters should fight. The skin bundles should have included meta weapons. A match win should bring more incentive. Overall a disappointment. These big crossovers need to BOOM. Disappointing.”
  • @dNstreeeet: “It’s a W! I wasn’t expecting to see King Kong and Godzilla fight, but I was still impressed by what technology is capable of in gaming these days. The graphics are really cool. I never thought I’d see these two movie monsters in Warzone.”
  • @EndyisBad: “I buck anyone who says the event is an L. These people just hate anything Call of Duty.” This game mode is the most fun I’ve had since Caldera came out in December.”
  • @Shadow_MW_: “The event can’t keep up with the hype in my eyes. It was cool. But the fact that the monsters don’t interact and that Godzilla doesn’t leave the water was weird.”

The mode itself is often described as a cool change and nice activity. But first impressions were often negative because expectations of the monsters were higher.

This is partly due to things that other games in the battle royale genre have already pulled off. Fortnite often makes Warzone look old in that regard. This is also the assessment of Twitch streamer Nickmercs, who was in Warzone for a long time:

Tweet translation: “The Warzone event is terrible. Maybe we’re spoiled by the Fortnite event, but damn bro. King Kong and Godzilla don’t even fight each other.”

Nickmercs refers to a Fortnite event with similarly sized figures:

Personal conclusion – Check out the nonsense in any case

I went into the event with no great expectations, not even sure if you would actually get to see the two of them in their full glory on Caldera.

Accordingly, the corners of my mouth turned up quickly when I first approached the map. There Godzilla and King Kong actually trudge!

This brings a very special feel to the game, because the monsters seem really overpowering and bring in a very exciting gameplay element. The first time goosebumps crept over my body.

Standing close to the giants is simply impressive and gives a certain kick. Especially in the “Peak” setting, there’s constant action, bullets come flying from every side and then some giant beast follows you.

The narrower the playing field towards the end, the more likely the monsters spark in between. When there are only 20, maybe 25 people left in the match (down from 60), the Titans’ attacks are a constant threat.

This requires more flexibility compared to the normal Battle Royale, but also provides more opportunities because everyone has to come to terms with it. Enemies keep coming out of hiding and rushing into my crosshairs in panic.

The highlight of the first evening was a victory with the help of Godzilla. We put a lot of pressure on the last opposing team and my duo partner still had the SCREAM device at the start which allowed him to control a monster attack.

Godzilla’s atomic breath went over the entire pitch circle. We still got away, but the opponents tore it up.

You can choose the attack point and the monster.

It’s not a mode you’re going to be grinding for the next 2 weeks because it’s so damn good. But the event is definitely worth an extended evening. A great change from Warzone everyday life.
