So far, there has been little gameplay for Bethesda’s new RPG Starfield, although it was supposed to be released on November 11, 2022. Now the game has been postponed to the first half of 2023. The only reason given was that fans should get the “best possible and most finely honed” game, so it effectively takes more time to develop.

According to a report by journalist and insider Jason Schreier, the problems with the game could be deeper. Accordingly, words like “the next cyberpunk” were probably used by developers.

Developers worried about the release

Like screamers Twitter shared, he had spoken to some of the developers in 2021 who had felt uncomfortable with the planned release date because development to date had not progressed far enough:

Last spring before E3, I spoke to some folks at Starfield who were extremely concerned about committing to a November 11th, 2022 release based on the progress they had made so far. (“Next Cyberpunk [2077]buzzed around as a term.) Good for Bethesda that they [den Release] postponed even after they announced the specific date.

Of course, it’s been more than a year since these talks, and a lot could have changed in Starfield’s development status. The term “next cyberpunk” may sound very unsettling for many, after all, CD Projekt Red’s RPG was released in a disastrous state, as is well known.

The reports of an ex-Starfield developer also point to some problems. Although the game should already look pretty good, it shouldn’t be sophisticated in terms of gameplay. So especially the flying still needs revision:

Starfield shift could have positives

Noting that Cyberpunk was also postponed and yet appeared in an unfinished state, Schreier added that the timeline is important: “Cyberpunk hasn’t been postponed far enough. This [Starfield] hopefully it will.”

In memory of: The release of Cyberpunk 2077 was originally planned for April 2020 and was then postponed by a total of six months. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Starfield needs as much or more time, after all, the current state of the RPG also plays a role, which Schreier doesn’t report anything about.

Either way, the postponement should benefit the game and give the development team the time they need to fix bugs and fine-tune the game. Accordingly, it may have been a good decision not to name a specific new release date until Starfield’s state is ready for it.
