What you should consider when buying a soundbar up to 300 euros

Before buying a soundbar, you should consider a few things.

Image: © Samsung 2022

The cheaper the soundbar, the smaller the range of functions is usually. But you can also get a good audio system for your television for little money. A few tips for making a purchase decision:

Speaker: Don’t be fooled by the high wattage. The quality of the loudspeakers is decisive. It’s worth checking whether manufacturers use separate tweeters and mid-range drivers for clean sounds, for example, like Polk Audio does.

Subwoofer: If you want rich bass and clear, deep tones, your soundbar needs a subwoofer. Wireless versions that you can set up flexibly are practical. Soundbars with an integrated subwoofer are usually not very powerful.

Channels: 2.0, 2.1, 5.1, 7.1 – what does all that actually mean? The number in front of the dot represents the number of speakers. The one after that indicates whether a subwoofer is included. Soundbars up to 300 euros are mostly 2.1 systems. But even with just two speakers, they enable virtual surround sound. The more channels are available from which the sound comes (i.e. loudspeakers), the better the sound can unfold – but of course that also costs more.

Connections: Bluetooth for streaming content from smartphones is standard today. Optical inputs, HDMI and USB are also common. Some soundbars also have an AUX input for connecting older analogue playback devices. Before you buy, think about what you want to connect and which sockets or transmission standards you need. If you only want to use the soundbar for the television, HDMI or an optical input is sufficient.

Smart features: Yes, voice control and integration into the smart home are nice, but not essential for a soundbar.

Sound settings: Most providers advertise special sound modes to improve the acoustics of TV programs (especially dialogues), games or movies. This is practical, because it allows you to optimally adapt the soundbar to your needs. It is ideal if you can easily make these settings with the remote control.
