Forever gone, almost there now? Skull & Bones by Ubisoft

Do you remember Ubisoft’s Skull & Bones? It would at least be understandable if that were no longer the case. Because the pirate game has been sailing through a veritable Bermuda Triangle of shifts for almost a decade now.

In development since 2013, Skull & Bones was first announced at E3 2017 and was scheduled for release in late 2018. After that, the release was first set for 2019, then 2020, later there were shifts to the end of fiscal year 2022 and fiscal year 2023, and in between the game was even completely revised. In short, it probably wouldn’t have surprised anyone if Skull & Bones eventually went utterly wrecked, but things now look set to take a surprising turn.

Rating for Skull & Bones in South Korea

Because during the week it became known that Skull & Bones received an age rating in South Korea, i.e. it was submitted to an appropriate authority that checked the game for possible content harmful to young people. Skull & Bones was rated “Not for Young People” for, among other things, “scenes involving smoking and drinking”. (via vgc.com)

But something else is crucial. Because an age rating is in most cases a strong indicator that a game will actually appear in the not too distant future. And that would really be a small sensation with Skulls & Bones. Because a timely release was not necessarily to be expected, despite the video files that have recently appeared. This is one of the reasons why a final appearance of Skull & Bones would probably be the biggest release surprise of 2022. Of course, the quality of the game still has to be seen.

What is this Skull & Bones actually?

Skull & Bones in gameplay trailer – multiplayer naval battles and loot hunt

Skull & Bones is a multiplayer-focused game in which you, as a pirate captain, roam the Indian Ocean and take on other pirates and their fleets. The idea for the game originally came from the naval battles of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, which were significantly expanded for Skull & Bones.

There should be several game variants: In Treasure Hunt mode, two teams of five players compete against each other, but you can also set sail alone. In a shared world, you will then encounter both AI opponents and human players that you can fight or with whom you can work together to take the freight from even the fattest treasure galleons.

Just last year it was said that Skull & Bones was “too expensive to fail”. Now the title is apparently about to be released.

Did you think Skull & Bones would actually still be out?
